HIV concern and IgE link?
« on: May 24, 2017, 01:54:58 pm »
Please help me I think I'm going crazy with all the what if questions in my head.
3 years ago I kissed a guy, and he rubbed my genitals with his finger. I don't know if his hands were dirty or had blood. It wasn't fingering as he didn't insert it inside my vagina but just rubbed my clit area. I have never had sex, this is all I ever did. I felt extreme guilt afterwards and I began to worry about HIV. I searched forums and everyone told me you can't get HIV from this incident. Anyway, I couldn't move past it so I tested for it about 6.5-7 months down the line, and it was negative.

Now 3 years after that incident, (I have not had any such incident after that) i was at my doctors & he ordered an IgE blood test and the levels came back quite high. I know that test is primarily for detecting allergies. Doctor told me it's high because I'm prone to allergies. However when I searched the internet it said IgE levels can be high because of HIV infection. I am now starting to think what if they did my HIV test wrong?

What should I do now? I can't test again I can't go through that anxiety again! I just need some assurance so my questions are

1. did my incident (kissing & rubbing genital with hand, with blood or not) transmit HIV?
2. Is high IgE level because I could have HIV? But if I tested negative for HIV then high IgE is not because of HIV, right?
3. What is the link between IgE and HIV?
4. If someone has immunodeficiency disorders that make them produce antibodies late (I have heard some people produce them late in rare situations) then a test past 6 months would for sure pick up HIV infection right? I don't know if I am one of those rare people or if I have an undiagnosed immunodeficiency disorder. That's why I tested after 6.5 months so would my test have been conclusive?
5. Is an IgE test used to detect HIV or is it only HIV specific tests that do that? Meaning is my high IgE result meaningless when it comes to HIV?

Please just reassure me. And please address my questions the way I asked as that would help rather than a general answer. Many thanks.

The incident you posted about was no risk to start with and you tested negative as expected beyond any testing window.

Use condoms for intercourse, test yearly for sti's and HIV as routine. You do not have HIV from the incident you are concerned about end of story.

As for you recent lab work it could be anything that is causing it do work with you doc.

Thank you.
The test I took was an HIV 1-2 Ag/Abs combo test. Its the only test available in my country. But is this reliable even after 6 months post exposure? Because I know antigens disappear after a while so then one would rely on the antibody portion of the test correct? Meaning does this test check for old HIV Infections too? Or just recent ones?

It conclusive after 3 months post exposure. So in addition to a negative result you also had no risk! HIV is not transmitted in this manner so move on with your life.

Here's what you need to know in order to avoid hiv infection:
Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, every time, no exceptions.

Keep in mind that some sexual practices which may be described as ‘safe’ in terms of HIV transmission might still pose a risk for transmission of other STI's, so please do get fully tested regularly and at least yearly for all STI's including but not limited to HIV and test more frequently if unprotected intercourse occurs

Also note that it is possible to have an STI and show no signs or symptoms and the only way of knowing is by testing.

More information on HIV Basics, PEP, TaSP and Transmission can be found through the links in my signature to our POZ pages, this includes information on HIV Testing

Kind regards

Jim

Sorry I still don't understand. I didn't test at 3 months, I tested after 6.5 months. Would the test still be conclusive then?
