Something new on the lipo front
« on: November 11, 2008, 09:08:09 pm »
I was speaking with a fellow HIV traveler tonight who mentioned he is going to undergo sleep study because it is possible he has developed lipo-associated sleep apnea.

This is the first I had ever heard of this, but I don't doubt the veracity of my friend's information. Apparently, it is an internal manifestation of lipodystrophy.

I presume it is lipyhypertrophic in nature.

Has anyone else run across this?

I am going to investigate it and see whether it is something I need to follow up on. I have been unable to sleep lying down for a while now and it is possible it is something related to this.

Amazing the things I learn every day.

HUGS,

Mark

Actually when I first was diagnosed with sleep apnea in 2001 I suggested this "theory" (at the time I'd made it up on my own :))) to an ENT specialist and he didn't seem to buy into it, but lipo was a bit new at the time.  Keep in mind people usually have apnea for years, even decades, before being diagnosed -- looking back I think I did.

However, your lipo is different than mine with your beauty hump and a quick wikipedia look does show that "Men, whose anatomy is typified by increased body mass in the torso and neck, are more typical sleep apnea sufferers, especially through middle age and older" so on the face of it seems it could make sense.

Keep me apprised!

I will let you know anything I find out.

Apparently, they do these sleep studies at the University of New Mexico Medical Center.

Just as an aside, did you know The Body's lipo forum is listed as "inactive."

I found that out when I was looking for info regarding this recent information on lipo to which I was introduced.

Odd, think I.

Mark

I can see how having buffalo hump or a build up of fat around internal organs might aggravate sleep apnea.

Yes, I guess I fit the category.

As Philly noted, I have the "beauty hump" (I rather like that description), and I look like I have a goiter.

I also have the beer belly, although it isn't from beer, isn't subcutaneous and seems to enlarge even though I have dropped six pounds. (I think I have answered my own question about weight loss and lipohypertrophy.

Onward and upward!

HUGS,

Mark

Yeah, I got the LIPO in my belly ???, no matter what I do  (I do 100 sit ups a day) its still there  ??? I have remained the same weight for about the last 5 yrs. currently 190LB, I can't lose or gain any more weight for some reason, if I do lose any weight, it comes form my Ass , Legs and face, then it gets a little tricky, and the LIPO really takes it's toll on how I look (due to being Very Muscular with weight training) and working out aerobics 3 to 4 times a week , so, I have to be very careful not to lose any muscle, if I start losing that, I'm gonna be in BIG TROUBLE (due to not having much body index fat) :-[
