Condom Broke
« on: June 13, 2012, 09:38:37 pm »
Hi everyone, 2 days ago, i had relationship with prostitute girl, and condom broke, it happened not more than 1 minute (maybe lesser than 1 minute).

then around 38hours after the incident i started pep treatment. the doctor gave me lamivudine 150mg and zidovudine 300mg. to be taken twice a day.
(60 TABLETS)
but i fell something weird my stomach, most probably after i take this treatment.

my question

1. whats my chance to get hiv?
2. is the treatment (medicine) sufficient enough?
3. i started 38 hours after the incident, hows the effectiveness of the treatment?

Thanks

Your risk was VERY low. I am actually surprised that POP was prescribed for that.

The meds are VERY powerful. You might experience them. Look around on this site. It lists all the meds and possible side effects.

Your treatment is more than sufficient to prevent HIV.

As your risk really didn't really warrant PEP, you ought to come out of this totally fine.

Jim,

It's totally up to you. I fully expect you to test negative following this very brief incident whether or not you take PEP. In over ten years, I've yet to see the insertive partner end up positive following a condom break (PEP or no PEP) and I do not expect you to be the first.

You need to know that if you continue with the PEP for the whole month, it will extend your hiv testing window period by a month. The window period is three months from the possible exposure, but with PEP it is four months from the possible exposure. In other words, you can get a conclusive result at three months following your last dose of PEP.

The earliest you should test is at six weeks following the incident or six weeks after your last dose of PEP if you continue with it. A six week negative must be confirmed at the three month point (either post-incident or post-PEP) but is highly unlikely to change.

While you have had a risk and do need to test, your risk is very, very much on the lowest end of the scale. You really don't need PEP, but again, it is your decision whether or not you continue to take it.

Thanks Ann, My consideration is only about the side effect of PEP. Which will make our liver worse right? after i consulted with the doctor, the doctor started to give me paracetamol to be taken 3x daily, if needed. do you think that i will suit me

Jim,

You don't really need to worry about your liver for the short time you'd be taking PEP. You're unlikely to even experience any short-term side-effects on the meds you've been given. You might get a bit of a headache (that's why the doctor recommended paracetamol - but you don't need to take it unless you feel you need it) and you might get a little bit of nausea. Nothing long term though.

You really don't need PEP, but if taking it makes you feel more at ease, go for it. I wouldn't continue if I were you, but that's for you to decide. It's not recommended in a case like yours in the guidelines.

You're more likely to find a bag full of hundred dollar bills lying on your doorstep tomorrow morning than you are to end up positive after this very brief condom break, PEP or no PEP.

And remember, you're extending your window period by one month by taking PEP. That's also something to consider.

Jim,

Not really. Obviously if you start to feel very unwell, you'll need to see your doctor. Otherwise, don't sweat it.

Jim,

Re-read your thread. We've already discussed your risk with you.

Talk to your doctor about your stomach pain.
