Influenza type A: Is it H1N1 or just the seasonal flu?
« on: October 19, 2009, 09:05:13 am »
I started getting sick while on vacationing in the mountains on September 14th. I came home and had a heart catherization the next week . I was feeling lots better but I was given antibiotics as a prophylaxis before the procedure. I had my procedure and every thing was normal. I continued being sick about another week. I saw my HIV Specialist on October 1st. I was supposed to receive my seasonal flu shot , but because I was already sick they said to wait a couple of weeks. I had again contracted the same symptoms of cough, congestion, headaches and sinus congestion. I was given 10 days of Levaquin for possible upper respiratory infection. After three to four days on the antibiotic I started getting better. I still finished the 10 day supply of the antibiotic. Then on October 15 I started all over again with cough, sinus congestion but this time i had quite a high temperature. Went to my local urgent care facility and they diagnosed me as having influenza. The said that since it had been so long since th beginning of the symptoms that the best course of treatment would be to immediately start Tamiflu. I asked if I just had Type A Influenza. They said that they treat both virus the same so start Tamiflu .

Does anyone know what is suggested to do if you already have had one of the Influenza infections should you still take both vaccines now or just take one or the other? Sort of confused on what is the best to do.

smalltown66,

Here is the CDC recs:

Prior Illness
Should I get vaccinated against 2009 H1N1 if I have had flu-like illness since the Spring of 2009?
The symptoms of influenza (flu-like illnesses) are similar to those caused by many other viruses. Even when influenza viruses are causing large numbers of people to get sick, other viruses are also causing illnesses. Specific testing, called “RT-PCR test,” is needed in order to tell if an illness is caused by a specific influenza strain or by some other virus. This test is different from rapid flu tests that doctors can do in their offices. Since most people with flu-like illnesses will not be tested with RT-PCR this season, the majority will not know whether they have been infected with 2009 H1N1 flu or a different virus.

Therefore, if you were ill but do not know if you had 2009 H1N1 infection, you should get vaccinated, if your doctor recommends it. So, most people recommended for 2009 H1N1 vaccination should be vaccinated with the 2009 H1N1 vaccine regardless of whether they had a flu-like illness earlier in the year. If you have had 2009 H1N1 flu, as confirmed by an RT-PCR test, you should have some immunity against 2009 H1N1 flu and can choose not to get the 2009 H1N1 vaccine. However, vaccination of a person with some existing immunity to the 2009 H1N1 virus will not be harmful. For more information on flu tests, see Influenza Diagnostic Testing During the 2009-2010 Flu Season.

Any immunity from 2009 H1N1 influenza infection or vaccination will not provide protection against seasonal influenza. All people who want protection from seasonal flu should still get their seasonal influenza vaccine.

I don't think getting vaccinated will be a problem, but you should talk to your Doc.

Veritas,

Thanks so much for your very informative information. I will read up on it some before I see my doctor on Wednesday.  I appreciate such a quick response.  I hope this thread will help others with similar questions and  concerns.

Thanks again,
