Virus on the Forums
« on: October 01, 2011, 07:22:00 pm »
I'm on a computer with a fresh install of Windows 7 Enterprise (installed yesterday) with Symantec Endpoint as my antivirus.  On my first visit to the forums on this notebook, I get the message that traffic was blocked from 95.163.66.208 web attack: malicious toolkit website 9 detected.   Traffic has been blocked from this application...  This occurs on two pc's here.  Is something up with the forums?

I'll check it out. Do you have Spybot installed?  If not, download, install, update, and immunize.  After that, run a system scan.  That'll help if you've already got malware on your system.

HIV going digital.

But that's ok, it won't break your computer, it will just make way for other malware to do so.

My laptop went all crazy yesterday as well with hundreds of pop-ups exploding all over the screen. I thought it was a problem with Internet Explorer. Evidently not.

This Malware attack has been ongoing since friday night. I just today got my desktop up and running (thanks to my techie bud) after it was brought down friday. My laptop is still going crazy with Malware Blocked alerts.

I wonder how many people seeking info or reassurance, or those newly infected came to this site and "Got infected" and had their computer lock up. Sux to be them I guess.

I wonder if it's a coincidence that my hard drive just burned on Friday. It would be a bad-ass computer virus to do that.

I am getting to the point where I no longer come here that much because the site is almost constantly slow, frequently ill and sometimes, it seems, potentially dangerous to visit.

I feel bad for the folks who invest so much time and effort here, and I appreciate the efforts they've made.

I'm just sayin'.

As Willy suggested above, I wonder.  I visited friends this weekend (positive ones) and suggested they look into this site.  They did and got the white box and all that jazz.  Now I return home to read up and find that it's a potentially serious problem several days in the running, and I'm left to wonder if I may have set them up for an infection or something.  I certainly hope not.

I'd be tempted to say that maybe it's time for S+S to have a come to Jesus moment and decide where they stand once and for all regarding this site.  The health of the site itself seems more perilous than that of many of its frequent posters.

AIDS isn't for sissies.

What's a bit odd to me is that I've been reading and posting on forums for over 10 years.  All allow pictures to be hosted (uploaded) to the site; one doesn't have to link to them as we now do here.  None of those forums have ever had the issues that these do with viruses (despite the fact we can't upload).  Some use very similar forum software, too.  What makes these so 'special'?

What makes these so 'special'?
I've wondered the same things as I haven't seen problems like this elsewhere.

I've wondered if it's simply a case of "a cheap host with poor server security? (though that's just a stab in the dark as I know nothing about and am making no judgement against the current host).

Or is it because of the nature of the site? Is this site targeted because it serves <insert bigoted comment about HIV positive people here>? Or because there are a bunch of "teh gays" here? Stigma and hatred have led to a lot of harrassment over the years.

Or is it a case of more targeted maliciousness? Does someone have it out for  (ie an vendetta against) the aidsmeds editors, owners, etc? This option has a high level of probability as it seems no matter how many times the software/database is migrated to other serves, the problems aren't fair behind. Not to mention that quite often the "attacks" happen just as a weekend begins. Then each time these problems arise, they result in an unknown of amount of client "damage" (which happens to members without adequate protection) which contributes to a generalized internet damage, loss of user/member/visitor confidence, extra costs to aidsmeds for tech service, etc.
