Scared to take atripla-adivse needed
« on: May 21, 2010, 08:43:02 am »
I was given atripla since in feb but so far i have not taken any. I am really scared.  the taught of me taking meds for the rest of my life is mind boggling. Also, i am even more scared of the side effects. I am scared that i may loose weight. At 130lbs & 5' 5, loosing weight is the last thing i want.

I started a new job about 3weeks ago as a data analyst. I cannot afford to mess up the data at all. No room for errors----100% concentration is needed. I was made to unerstand that atripla makes it hard for you to concentrate. Can someone advise me on the issue.? I will be takin my first dose next fri for memorial weekend? would i be able to be 100% on mon for work? What about diaorrhea?  can someone say what their first couple days was like takin this pill? Thankszzzzz

What about your ability to concentrate? Also, i love to party---i party every saturday.--my Dr. advise me not to party until the side effects subsides (2-4weeks after ) and i should take it after i get home from the club (around 5am). Do any of you party? if so, do u take it b4 or after the club?

Hello KevyKev- I would wait until after your road trip to start your meds just in case you don't feel well for a few days.
Peace and have fun,
Billy

Hey man, the problem with Atripla is when you start it.  May be for the first month.  I took my first month Atripla with a lot of disturbances.  When I took it I feel like am dead.  You will be facing all kinds of shitts.  That was the time when I don?t know nothing about the HIV medication.  I took it during the morning time before breakfast.  Then I stopped taking it for about one other month and start to take it again at bed time.  During this time I was having a long and deep sleeping but I don?t know the other feelings I may have as I am in my bed.  May be I have a feeling of being drunkard or intoxicated etc.

The Atripla now became a friendly med.  I am taking it like a diet pill.  My numbers improved and I am in a state of complete health.  I don?t know for how long but this is the way I am now.  I am working very hard without any fatigue.  I also drive a long distance almost in every single day.  At least I drive more than 70 miles from home to my work place.  I always want to know if this might have impact in the long or short run.

I want also to meet you if you come to DC?

Hey Kev, you don't mention what your numbers are like. It may be the case that you're putting yourself in danger of becoming ill due to not starting the meds, but on the other hand, your numbers may be at a place where you have the luxury of not starting just yet.

It's really important that you feel ready to start. These meds are a big commitment.

You will get advice better suited to your situation if you share your numbers.

And welcome to the forums, by the way.

thank you.  this is the first time im using this forum btw.  my numbers are as of Feb 17 2010---- CD4- 342 and VL 87,000---diagnosed Feb 7, 2007. I got really scared wen  the cd4 fell below the 350mark. I tried on two different occasions to swallow the pill but i end up spitting it rite back out. As i was about to take the first pill my i can feel my heart rate increasing and pores opening. Scared as hell. I was wondering if burning a spliff b4 i attempt to take the meds would help?

Another thing that is on my mind is my nite life. I love the clubs, i been clubbing since i was 16yrs old (9 yrs ago). Im am not really a drinker, the most i would take is a cup of vodka & cranberry---i cant drink much since i drive. With the atripla coming into play, what effects you think it would have?  My dr. told me  take it wen i get back in from the club. I met someone who told me that if i want a nite life, atripla should not be the drug of choice.

Kev, while you're not in any immediate danger, it does look as though it may be getting close to time for you to start.

Another number based question - what are the CD4 results like for your last four tests? It can be difficult to go on one result. I've had numbers in the 300s, but they went back up. You can see my numbers history in my profile. (I'm still not on meds, btw) Using your numbers as a means to decide when to start treatment is a matter of looking at trends over time, not just one isolated result.

I don't blame you for being wary of the Sustiva component of Atripla. Sustiva is one drug I'm going to steer clear of and my doctor is aware of this. Maybe you need to talk to your doctor about trying a combo that does not include Sustiva.

Um, my numbers used to be in my profile, but it seems the biography portion of our profiles got disabled during our recent server change.

Here's my last five results:

2009

459, 25%
399, 25%
561, 23%
576, 26%

2010

392, 29%

I just had a blood draw this past tuesday and do not have the results yet.

I also had one time when my numbers went from 525, to 299, and back up to 489. Nothing weird was going on in my life during this time and I wasn't sick. The numbers just fluctuate like that. Like I said above, it's all about the trends over time.
