Paranoid,

Your symptoms are NOT indicative or primary hiv infection.  And symptoms, if they occur at all, do so 2-4 weeks post exposure.  They come all at once, and go all at once a week or so later.

As you have been told, you are HIGHLY unlikely to have become infected through giving a blowjob.

Go get that test and come back and give us the good news.

oh goodness, I am ashamed to be posting again.  I haven't went for my test yet because quite frankly, I am terrified and seriously can not handle the 1 week wait.  I still have a dry cough that just won't go away and I am terrified that this is an indicator of HIV infection.  Does a cough come on this quickly after infection.  Also, I have read (from this site) that saliva actually inhibits HIV transmission.  What if you were drinking alcohol that night and your mouth was dry (saliva surpressed) I have read on other sites that alcohol consumption may actually help facilitation.  I am deeply sorry for the constant questioning when in fact, I need to just get a test done but I AM SHIT BAKED!!  Please help!!!  what else could a cough possibly be, I have had my throat swabbed, took antibiotics, puffer, post nasel drip....everything.  It seems as though this is the only thing left.  *sigh* :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(  Also, any idea what generation test they use in Ontario???  Canada

Thank you kindly.

Paranoid,

Do you smoke?

Have you had a chest x-ray or TB tine test? Go see your doctor and ask him what is wrong with your chest. We cannot diagnose you.

A cough has nothing to do with primary hiv infection.

We cannot make you go get tested either - not that you really need to because you gave a blowjob - but because you obviously need to do so and collect your negative result for your own peace of mind.

Go get your negative result so you can put this behind you. I can pretty much hear you saying "oh woe is me, what if it's positive" and what of it? Isn't it better to know so you can look after yourself with the proper medical care, or do you seriously think it would be better to live in anxiety and collapse one day ten years from now with PCP? Think about it.

I'm expecting you to test negative. So should you. It's time to stop your pity party and go get tested.

To answer the question you should have placed here, the answer is no risk for HIV. You do need to talk to an expert but is one that you can talk to one on one. You can't be coming here everytime you decide to have sex and then you question it. Seek the help of a mental health professional for your concerns.

paranoid,

I've merged your new thread into your original thread - where you should post all your additional thoughts or questions. It helps us to help you when you keep all your additional thoughts or questions in one thread.

If you need help finding your thread when you come here, click on the "Show own posts" link under your name in the left-hand column of any forum page.

Please also read through the Welcome Thread so you can familiarize yourself with our Forum Posting Guidelines. Thank you for your cooperation.

Receiving oral sex - having a guy go down on you - is not a risk for hiv infection. Neither is frottage, which is the term for rubbing genitals together, without penetration. As long as you are making sure your partner is wearing a condom if he puts his penis inside your anus or vagina, you will be fine where hiv is concerned.

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL STIs together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with a sexually transmitted infection. Sex with a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can make sure your partner is using them correctly.

Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Thank you so much Ann, you have made me feel much better.  Just another question..you mention other STI's are easier to catch through receiving oral sex..does this go for both women and men or is it different?  I know it is possible get Herpes but what about Syphillis and the others?  Just a question.

Paranoid,

Yes, it is totally possible to have herpes, gonorrhea and syphilis infection in the throat/mouth and it is totally possible to transmit these infections to a person you give oral to. When you have your regular, routine sexual health care check ups, it is wise to have throat swabs done if you engage in oral sex.

Hello experts,

sorry I'm back but just one quick question...do you know if hospitals (particularly in Canada) check for HIV when they do routine blood work (if you go in emergency for an illness)  I know they check for wbc count, sodium, etc..but do they check for HIV automatically?  (and not inform you?)

They wouldn't check you for HIV without telling you or asking.

Thanks Rapid.

So, they don't normally test for HIV and if they do, they must ask your permission?  What if they don't ask nor tell you, is that illegal (in Canada)

As far as I know it's illegal no matter where you live, they need your permission first.

HIV blood tests are not included in a routine blood checks...if you want an HIV test then you have to request it, it will not be done automatically.

If you are pregnant you will be offered an HIV test as part of your antenatal care.
