Has this kind of thing happened to anyone else? Hope not.

I'm confident the error message relating to the report to Moderator function will be passed on to Peter and fixed up.

As spam PM's go it was rather a good one. At least we got a sample of the merchandise on offer. ;)

I didn't get a picture of anything with mine. I got a nasty subject line and a few different links to other sites. Of course I didn't try to go to these sites. I was afraid of getting a virus on my computer.
Anyway, it's ok now. I PM'd Ann about it and now I don't feel so insulted since others got this also. I thought somebody just really had something against me for some reason.

Okay, I am not so naive as to be unaware that this kind of thing happens online, only I just don't like the idea of having to shut down my PM box for fear of finding unwanted garbage in it.

This spammer has an email: donald92135@yahoo.com (don't send him an email, or he'll have yours!), but if you google his email, you'll see he's spammed many forums, and knows some sort of security weakness in the forums software we use.

However, we're pretty sure we've effectively banned him for now (using his IP address, and the multiple email addresses he's used to spam other sites), so it shouldn't happen again (from him at least).

Question -- did everyone just recieve a PM in the forums, or an email notification with a link to the PM as well? Please reply here if you got an automated EMAIL with the subject line "New Personal Message: WHAT'S UP MOTHER******!!!" We know everyone got the PM, but want to know who got the EMAIL as well (a much worse security breach).

I did check out the SMF forum (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=98450.0) and found some discussion on the subject of PM SPAM. Looks like it has been brought up and then forgotten, so I started a new thread. ;D

Maybe if I don't let the subject die, it will not be forgotten and some measures will be implemented to thwart this type of thing.

Anyway, back to waiting for my night in shinning Armour. :-*

That's a good way to end up with something bad on your computer. Could possibly launch an offscreen window to monitor keystrokes. I use a Mozilla browser because windows can't be positioned out of view. I've sometimes caught a small window lurking in the corner of my screen and immediately close it.

The spammer created an account, then selected random usernames, picking the maximum 10 at a time. He only sent it to about 50 folks. Most users in the forums have their profiles set to receive an email notification when they get a PM. You can turn this off in your Profile's "Personal Message Options" section -- you'll see "Notify by email every time you receive a personal message: _______" on this page, and you'll have a couple of options there to turn this feature on or off.

Rest assured, the spammer never obtained anyone's email address -- they just used the forums to send you an automated email.

So how do we fix this? We can try a few things. We've blocked this spammer from being able to visit the site, but we'll need to make sure this doesn't happen again by others. We might decide to disable email notifications for PMs. There isn't an admin option for this, so we'll have to edit the underlying software.

But this won't solve the PM spam issue. I've lowered the threshold of how many users a PM can be sent to, so now the limit is 5 instead of 10. We'll explore other options as well.

I've deleted all the PMs from our spammer -- you might still see the PM, but it's subject line and content have been deleted.

Out of curiosity the picture wasn't one of those aggresive JPG exploits that have been going around the net was it? I was reading up about them causing a lot of problems, with just the perverted porn picture starting all kinds of executable files on your system.

Maybe the message board software protects that though.

I mean, it is July, just 2008 now instead of 2006. If someone was doing a search for "porno" I can see how they might think that last post in 2006 was recent.
