worried..just want reassurance before i get tested again!
« on: July 30, 2009, 09:19:03 am »
In feb of this year, I had sex with a man I've known a long time and the condom broke twice. We both heard it both times and he pulled out immediately and put another one on both times. But before this during foreplay his genitals touched mine and I'm pretty sure there was precum.

Anyways, got tested 7 in a half weeks later and was negative for everything but chlamydia. Had never been tested for any stds except HIV which was neg before him because I only had two partners before him with whom I was in monogomous relationship and we always used condoms ( although there were times of frommage? I suppose is the word) but I had been tested for hiv before the new guy and was neg. Is a 7 in a half week negative test comforting? Even though somehow I contracted chlamydia ( he claims he didn't have it and showed me a paper from his clinic that his doc signed saying he didn't have any stds but he could have just gotten it cleared up and went back for the paper). I made him get retested for HIV and yesterday he says the clinic told him his blood sample was tainted and they can't use it, he has to come back for a retest. That sounds scary and unconvincing to me because I assume things like that rarely ever happen. What's your advice? I am going to get restested since its been past 6 months now but I'm worried! Thank you in advance

TT, what anyone says about their status is totally irrelevant in terms of your own. When there has been a risky incident the only way for you to be certain about your status is by getting tested at the correct time.

Yes, a negative at 7 weeks is very encouraging. The average time to seroconversion is 22 days. All but the very smallest number of those who are going to seroconvert will do so within 4-6 weeks after a possible exposure to HIV. So a negative at 7 weeks is very unlikely to change to positive when you do your final test at 13 weeks.

The fact that condoms were used means you were protected until they broke. And the potential exposures were very brief. Those are other significant factors in your favor.

I do expect you to come out of this ok.

Cheers.

Poohbear,

Frottage (rubbing genitals together without penetration) isn't a risk for hiv infection. (Fromage is a dairy product! ;) ) However, frottage IS a risk for some other STIs, chlamydia included. It is also possible to have chlamydia without having symptoms, so you could have had the chlamydia for a while.

Like Andy, I also expect you to test hiv negative when you re-test.

I wouldn't worry about what your partner said about having to re-test. If they used a test where a blood-draw is needed (as opposed to a finger-stick or gum-swab), sometimes things happen like the lab employees forget to refrigerate the sample, and sometimes things get dropped and broken. It happens. Don't sweat it.

Great. I suppose I was worried because of contracting chlamydia. Have you ever heard of clinics somehow getting your blood tainted in recent years by the way?  I appreciate your help! Thanks

Ann thank you! I feel much better. After a few days of reading numerous websites I began to get paranoid. No more self diagnosing for me! Thanks to both of you

Poohbear,

I know you already seem to be quite conscientious about using condoms, but I want to give you my standard condom lecture anyway, because there's helpful information in it. You mentioned hearing the condom break both times, and this is probably due to there being air trapped in the tip of the condom. Please make sure you read the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can learn the proper use of condoms. You can put the condom on your fella yourself, to make sure it's on correctly.

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex without a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through all three condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Good luck with the test.
