How soon can I have sex after starting PrEP?
« on: January 03, 2017, 01:46:08 pm »
Hello,

I have a question about PreP. I understand PreP needs to be taken daily to be effective. My question is how soon can you have sex with someone after starting PreP in order for it to be effective?

I mean, I understand Post Exposure needs to be taken within 72 hours after exposure but what about PreP? Let's say I start my FIRST Prep medication today, do I need to wait certain amount of time in order to be "protected"? A few hours? a day? two days?

My BF is HIV+, we're no monogamous and we would like to have sex without condom to be more "intimate". I understand there's still (very low) risk with bareback sex even if you take PreP.

Last question,  I understand Truvada can be used both as PreP and PEP. Is the only difference between these 2 just a matter of the timing? PeP after exposure? PreP before exposure?  There's no difference in terms of effectiveness? or Drug formula?

Thank you

How soon will PrEP offer protection well some research indicated that PrEP taken  daily, reaches its top level protection by about 20 days, in rectal tissue after about 7 days and PrEP is not a guaranteed to protect you, on that note PrEP is supposed to be used along with safer-sex practices, such as condom use and regular HIV & STI testing. Also keep in mind other then HIV it will not offer any STI protection.

PrEP (Pre-exposure prophylaxis) is taking Truvada daily (tenofovir and emtricitabine) and PEP Post-exposure prophylaxis is normally taking a short course 28/30 days of drugs but a full combination so a 3 drug combination instead of just 2.

Yes, I'm aware of this. Thank you. :)

This is news to me. I did PEP twice before (condom breaks) and I was only prescribed one medication (Truvada) for both situations for 30 days.
I don't remember taking anything else other than Truvada during my PePs.

The rest of you topic has been moved to Am I Infected?.
https://forums.poz.com/index.php?topic=65984.0

Look this is HIV prevention, if you are active and have concerns about an encounter or activity was a risk keep it in the "Am I Infected?" section and without a subscription you are limited to 3 questions for a reason.

Jim

I know which forum this is.  I'm just being responsible and trying to educate myself. I have not had any encounter with WS play. I am interested but I would like to know the risks involving this. I have pretty much read everything about oral/anal/frottage/fingering etc but not a lot information available about other sexual stuff (WS and some other kinks etc ) Hence, I posted this here.

But thank you.

Look its a far shorter list what is a risk vs what is not. Instead of posting possible sex scenarios past us just protect yourself now you have the information on PREP and PEP and use condoms.

HIV is very limited in how it is sexually transmitted reduce you risks as mentioned above and in short keep in mind that some sexual practices which may be described as ‘safe’ in terms of HIV transmission might (do) still pose a risk for transmission of other easier to transmit STI's, so please get fully tested regularly and at least yearly for all STI's including but not limited to HIV and test more frequently if unprotected intercourse occurs

There is not much more we can do for you.
