Mindless movies
« en: Enero 19, 2008, 01:52:36 pm »
When you're blue, what's your favorite movie to just 'veg' out to and distract yourself?
To name a few of mine:
1) The Brady Bunch Movie
2) Priscilla, Queen of The Desert
3) To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar

And so much more but you're all up!

One of my absolute favorites is "The Birdcage."  I don't think it's a mindless movie, but it is one that can lift my spirits.

There was a Chinese take-out place on Broadway and Falcon in Long Beach.  I was across the street from the Falcon Bar.  I spent many mornings, afternoons and evenings with my friends at the Falcon.  The Chinese take-ouy place was called Wong's.  When they closed their doors one year, we left a sign on the window...

When you get past some of the logistics in the 1995 L.A. crime film w/ Robert DeNiro, Val Kilmer and Al Pacino I like the film Heat.

The opening scene is not believable because Robert DeNiro and Val Kilmer are riding on the Blue Line to steal an ambulance from a hospital.  They get off the train and steal the ambulance but... there is no hospital on the Blue Line.  They would have had to change trains for either the Green Line or the Red Line to have open access to a hospital.  Then the first robbery starts, they are approximately two blocks off the Blue Line and the main transit terminal at 7th and Flower.

I went to see The Craft with S. Jason Black shortly after his book Urban Voo Doo, a Beginners Guide to Afro Carribean Majic was released.  In this film 4 high school girls begin practicing majik.  One lives in Long Beach, another lives in the Valley while another lives in West L.A. and they all attend the same school and walk everywhere.  In one scene they walk from school to Hollywood and Vine and then to the Long Beach harbor.  In real time, it would take hours to get there by car but they walk?

In The Lost Boys  Jason Pactric and Kiefer Southerland are racing their bikes South from the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and the come upon the caverns where the vampires live.  In real life, you can cross the train tressel and end up at the 3rd Street Beach but, the caverns are actually a few miles to the North and underneath University of California, Santa Cruz.  At the time this film was made, vampires were not actually living in Santa Cruz which was famous in the day for having the most Witches in California.   However comma that's Hollywood.  Have the best day

talk about faux pas... what about The Graduate?  Near the end Dustin HOffman is riding his motorcycle back across the Bay BRidge to Berkley.  They show him on the upper lever heading north.  Only the upper level heads S. into San Francisco. The lower level is one way north, only how could you film him?  You wouldn't be able to see him.

Now, when it comes to feel good films, a couple of my favorite are China Town and Dog Day Afternoon with Al Pacino robbing a bank for his boyfriend.

I like things like that in movies.  Like in Jackie Chan's "Rumble in the Bronx" for example.  It's shot in Chinatown in Vancouver, with the Northshore mountains looming in the background!  Wrong country, wrong topography and not a black person in sight but entertainment nonetheless...

Another mindless movie I enjoy is St. Elmo's Fire.  In one scene the Mare Winningham's character gets a new Chrysler LeBaron convertible (if she get engaged and... she gets the car).  Soon her character is in a cafe with the father character who asks... "Did you get your car fixed?"

I wondered why a new car would need to be fixed.  Last year, I bought a used Chrysler LeBaron convertible and found out why the car would need to be fixed.  It was a Chrysler LeBaron convertible.  ;D Have the best day

The fart scene in Blazing Saddles alwyas gets me laughing. Also, there are sone of John Water's OLD movies (before Crybaby and Hairspray) i.e. Desperate Living, Polyester, Female Trouble etc that are SO gross, they make you forget anything that might be going on in reality for at least two hours...warning: you MUST have a twisted sense of humor and a stron stomach if you decide to watch any of these!

I love when you catch things (like the tire tracks in Blazing Saddles) that are obvious flubs in movies. Almost every movie has one...in fact, there must be a site or book out there covering the topic!

Al Pacino would put me over the edge.

The Birds-

The house and the school used in The Birds are not actually in Bodega Bay, they are both located a couple of miles inland in the town of Bodega.  The school was really a church and is now a museum (and gift shop).  There is a bar next to the museum where lunch and dinner are served.  Everyone in town calls the owner Mom, she owned it then and she owns it now.  The cast and crew ate all their meals at her place during filming because there was no other place to go back then.  Mom, makes the best burger I have ever had.

There was an alternate ending to The Birds which was not used because of the cost.  As the family escapes Bodega Bay, they head to San Francisco, reach the Golden Gate Bridge and the Birds are waiting on the bridge.

Caddyshack-

I think of this film every time I see a Baby Ruth candy bar in the display of any market  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Groundhog Day has always been a favorite. Partly because I used to live less than thirty miles away from Punxatawney for a number of years, partly because it helped me get through a rough time while living in SF and partly for it's strong Buddhist flavor.

Little Miss Sunshine is pretty high up the list now as well!  :)

Edited to add: I'm trying to remember the movie he was in with Robert DeNiro where they played thugs and Pesci was going to be "made" but then got killed.  I can't remember the name of it and it's driving me crazy!

Oh, yeah! Does anyone remember the club Whoopi Golberg went 'across' the street to in SISTER ACT? Supposedly, the church was in SF but that club was in LA - I lived a block away and used to do my laundry at that laundromat next to the club. On Sunday nights, it became a co-sexual S&M/leather/fetish bar called Club F*ck. The interior scenes in the movie are actually done inside the bar as well. Just thought ya outta know...

There was a dirt parking lot on First and Elm in Long Beach and if anyone who had not paid the monthly rate for parking tried to use that lot, there was always someone yelling "move your car".  On day, a Union 76 gas station was suddenly being built and I wondered wehy because, there was a Union 76 station on Ocean Drive, just two blocks away. Strange indeed unless we have seen Lethal Weapon IV.  That station was built for a 1 time pyrotechnics explosion-  If it failed, the movie was to be scrapped.

One of my friends was a landscape designer in Orange County and did not notice all the new palm trees on First Street were made of plastic.

Remember the round building where the blond girl was tossed over the balcony in Lethal Weapon?  That too  is on Ocean Drive in Long Beach.  Dr. Fred, who owned the company I worked for lived in that building, about 3 floors below.  We were having a loud party for the event.

Remember the scene in Pearl Harbor where they leave the party in New York to take a police boat to a ship?  That ship is the Queen Mary and has a permanent cement foundation in Long Beach.  The little islands with the red and green lights are oil wells in the Long Beach harbor.  Have the best day

Well. well, well, Michael! I used to live in LA and am still amazed at movies (new and old) where I have to pause the movie and think about where that scene was shot. In the Michael Douglas movie FALLING DOWN, the store where he aquires ammo from the Nazi freak owner was right around the corner from me - acroos the street from Club F*ck and the laundromat on Sunset Blvd in SISTER ACT which I mention in a prior post.

And I hope you slept well Betty!!!

My favorite mindless movies are the crap slasher films series, mainly the Friday the 13ths.

Also love Rock & Roll Highschool with the Ramones...and most zombie flicks.

Now that's mindless. Iggy. As long as it isn't realistic...love the fake slasher movies. Have you seen SERIAL MOM?

Paul, I watched the rest of Godfather II and then read for awhile.  I didn't go to sleep until well after midnight and didn't get up until quarter to 10 this morning.  Zzzzzzzzzzz ;D

Betty, Betty, Betty...don't you know we must be in bed by 10 PM? LOL
I've needed some sleepy nights myself lately and actually had THREE ten hour nights this past weekend. Now I am raring to go! We did watch the end of a mindless movie on TNT last night...but we're going to Madison Square Garden to see Kathy Griffin tomorrow night. YAY!

I have spent more than my fair share of time in this nameless small town in Northern California.  I used to spend a lot of nights in the bar at the lodge and knew almost everyone.  There was once a film being made in that town, Robin Wright had the starring role.  She had a 6 page spread in Vogue at the time.  Rae Dawn Chong was the Producer and on many nights after shooting the cast and crew would meet in the bar at the lodge for adult beverages.  The town got used to having celebrity in their midst because Robin Wright was there every day but... When Rae Dawn Chong showed up, the bar was so excited to have the daughter of Cheech and Chong as a guest.  No one got it so I had t tell them... Rae Dawn Chong was Tommy Chongs daughter and... Cheech Marin was the comedy partner of Tommy Chong, not one of the parents.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D  Have the best day

deja vu

I was watching some of Commando the other day with Rae Dawn Chong and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
When asked by my boyfriend what I was watching I replied and gave the characters names.
I had to explain who Rae Dawn Chong was to him. It took him a couple of times of me explaining for him to grasp that she was Tommy Chong's daughter. LOL maybe he had some pain pills in him. I dont know.

OK! Who has seen FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC?  see http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093036/
with  Louise Fletcher ...  Grandmother - Olivia Foxworth

Victoria Tennant ...  Mother - Corrine Dollanganger

        Kristy Swanson ...  Cathy Dollanganger

It's a 'fun' movie with an edge to it.

Off to see Kathy Griffin at Madison Square Garden tonight!!! YAY! It's a Christmas present to us (John and me) and with all going on, we almost forgot till the other day that we had the tickets. I'll post tomorrow about her show - and "My Life On The D List" starts sometime this summer (June?).

Winaroo - perhaps instead of pain pills did he get out of a suspiciously smoky car??? LOL

And Randy- Rosemary's Baby? What a hoot? I always picture that creepy woman carrying THE baby from room to room taking care not to drop the Anti-Christ!
