Media says that Fish spa is a Risk?
« on: May 22, 2012, 08:17:34 pm »
Hey there  :),
Thank you for having the possibility to ask a question here.
My fear is having contracted HIV from visiting a Fish SPA in Thailand. This fear has been caused by the media, because I did not think of HIV in that situation.
When I got home I wanted to show my boyfriend what exactely a Fish pedicure is and got real horror newspaper articles, that HIV can be transmitted that way if the water is not changed after every client (which it is not in Thailand) in caise kf accidently bleedings into the water and if the next Person has sores.
The precautions are therefore Not having a fish spa with fresh shaved legs or cuts in the feet, according to the article.
Well on the one hand I believed that HIV dies outside his Host weithin a few seconds but I am not sure if it is the Same with water, because it does Not dry in there. Additionally I had some cuts on my feet because I was backpacking there and walking a Lot. These cuts did Not bleed but they were not yet healed and I was shaving my legs an Hour before.
Is this a transmission Mode for HIV? Are These pferred entries? Do I need testing?
My rational mind says that it is probably just an urban myth but I am Not sure and a bit confused because of the strong Media presence!

I hope you don't find this stupid and if so I am really sorry!

I read about this. Apparently these fish spas have been banned in the United Arab Emirates or somewhere like that because people got icked out about HIV.

It's all bullshit. You can't contract HIV from having goldfishes nibbling on your toes. You might contract something else, but not HIV.

So how is HIV spread? I'm glad you asked, Melissa!

HIV is a fragile virus, it is transmitted in very particular ways. Those ways are:

Unprotected vaginal and anal sex;
Sharing contaminated injecting equipment such as needles and syringes;
In some cases from HIV positive mother to her unborn or nursing infant.

Please take the time to read our Welcome Thread. It contains links to our lessons on HIV transmission.

MtD

Wow thanks for the prompt reply! Right now I'M visiting my cousins in switzerland so there might be a weird Time change in my posts :).
Did you also read that http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2050342/Fish-pedicures-foot-spas-spread-HIV-hepatitis-C.html ? If links are Not allowed here please delete it :).
So does HIV in the water die as soon as in the air? I wouldn't be upset at all if there haven't been Cuts on my feet... Well and the Region I did it has a quite high prevalence. They did Not even explain in their article how Long HIV survives in water or how many blood would be needed!
Well damn newspapers, why are they allowed to print Information that is not confirmed?
Well, I hope I can forget this. It was such a nice vacation!

Melissa,

Despite what else it might have going for it the Daily Fail is not a credible source for information about HIV.

See the list I provided above? Those are the only ways a person contracts HIV these days.

HIV has to be transmitted from human to human. Moreover that transmission must occur inside the body. HIV cannot survive in water nor in the air. It is extremely sensitive to even the slightest changes in temperature, salinity and pH.

Rags like the Fail are not interested in facts or truth or reliability. They're interested in tacky stories like "Martians Enlarged My Breasts While I Slept". Things which generate sales and advertising revenue.

Really you have nothing to worry about in terms of HIV. If I thought any differently, I'd say so.

Regards,

MtD

You are so right :). Somewhere my rational brain also tells me that this is nothing but bullshit and that they just want good stories to make the public crazy. And then other publisher saw, that this story gets a lot attention and they also printed it  >:(
It was just the shock at that moment that made me nervous and scared.
Thank you :-)
