Help Appreciated (peace of mind, obnoxious symptoms)
« on: December 28, 2013, 10:00:37 pm »
6 weeks ago, i received and performed oral on a girl of sort-of-unknown HiV status (she was negative at 5-6 weeks post wsw sex). We also had protected vaginal, but no party ejaculated. She is HSV1 positive.

Had/have on and off urethra irritation, will be turning to my doctor for help on that, but for the past month (starting 2 weeks post-exposure) I've had a variety of symptoms. I wouldn't take note except 1) I have an incredible immune system and never am sick and 2) these specific symptoms have never occurred to me.

For 2 weeks around 12/3, my lymph nodes in my neck were seriously painful. No swelling, just pain and a mild sore throat on top. This was accompanied next week by general joint soreness, and some weird pain on the inside joint of my knee. Some light headaches would come and go as well.

Now, for the past 10 days, I've had this cough. Only once or twice a day, but I have a weird dry cough, and it just feels weird in my throat/chest, not in a good way. I saw my doctor on 12/10, he said I had a light fever (99) and asked me if I had drank coffee, which I had. He thought it was highly doubtful this was HIV, and said "our tests will detect this stuff at 3 weeks, so go take this to lapcorp." No nightsweats or vomiting.

Is there any way I can be HIV positive? I'm going to get tested in a couple days and then again in another 6 weeks but its hard to shake the feeling that these symptoms don't match up conveniently or somehow I have some new strain of it.

Thanks for your help, this whole experience has opened my eyes to the incredibly supportive communities for infectious diseases, you all provide a great service.

You didn't have a risk having protected vaginal sex and the cunnilingus was not a risk for HIV as well . The risk for sexually transmitting HIV comes from unprotected vaginal and anal sex .

ALTHOUGH YOU DO NOT NEED HIV TESTING AT THIS TIME for this incident , anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results.

Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than HIV. Some of the other STDs can be present with no obvious symptoms, so the only way to know for sure is to test.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid HIV infection. It really is that simple!

Thanks Jeff.

I am feeling very unsettled about the entire episode (plus this cough is getting worse. my med-school brother says it's bronchitis but i've never had bronchitis in my life) so i will be getting tested in a week just for a solid 6 weeks and change. fyi, i had fellatio performed on me and i performed cunnilingus but i assume your statement doesn't change in that regard.

does being recently sick impact the test at all?

thanks

As Jeff told you, you never had an exposure and you don't need testing.

You do not need testing over this specific incident . The theoretical risk for HIV transmission from oral sex comes from GIVING a blow job to a man with a high HIV viral load while you have significant wounds in your mouth such as meth mouth . People lump all oral sex in the same risk group and its an error to do so .

You did not get HIV from performing cunnilingus or getting your dick sucked because that is not the way HIV is transmitted .

im going in for a 6-week full panel test before i have sex with my girlfriend. i know you all said i did not have a risk but it's literally more economical to pay for a panel test that includes a HIV ELISA in addition to the other tests i need rather than select them individually.

as of friday at 11 pm, it'll be 6 weeks since my hook-up with the girl. for purposes of STI/STD (and HIV) testing, i'm guessing it's still 6 weeks if i get it at 8am friday rather than waiting until saturday right? viruses dont count hours, right?

final question, as long as you guys answer this, i'll be out of here. thanks.

gh,

You can test any time over this NO RISK situation and get a conclusive result. And no, a virus doesn't count hours.
