Do i need to get tested ?
« on: October 23, 2017, 02:28:49 pm »
Hello, and thanks for adding me.

Firstly, forgive my ignorance on this issue, i just need some guidance i guess.
I have kept in contact with 2 daughters of an ex girlfriend via Facebook, i got along with them quite well (no nothing EVER happened), i split with their mother a little over 5 years ago, when they were about 16,
one of the daughters has contacted me to tell me she is poorly with HIV (and apparently her meds aren't working), she's unsure how she contracted it, and the doctors told her there is a possibility she had it from birth, she is approx' 21 now.
she approached her mother about it, and her mother denies having it (wouldn't surprise me if she lied),
Obviously, i had a sexual relationship with her mother over the course of the year we were together,
Aside from a cold I've had for a week, i don't feel poorly or tired or anything,
I believe it's not unusual for a child to be born HIV+ and live to adolescence,
but for her mother to live for 21+ years HIV+ with no visable health issues ! is that likely/possible ?

Do i need to be concerned? this doesn't just affect me, I'm in my 2nd relationship since, i could have infected 2 further people.
Once again, forgive my ignorance,
Any advice is most appreciated.

Neil.

There's certainly no reason to be overly concerned, but since you did have (presumably) unprotected sex with the girl's mother and, in retrospect, are unaware of her HIV status, for your own peace of mind--and to avoid all the speculation involved in your post--you may wish to test for HIV antibodies to put the issue to rest.

Overwhelmingly, the odds are that you will be negative--but why continue to wonder when you can know for sure?
