Neg at 23 days?
« on: January 18, 2017, 03:28:32 am »
Dear all,

Thank you for being such an awesome and supportive group!

Here's a bit about my circumstances. I had a low risk exposure 23 days ago (protected insertive vaginal intercourse). I got tested yesterday using the instant test (the one that comes back within 30 min) and it was negative. I was told that these tests are comparable to ELISA at 26 days, but anxiety got the better of me so I tested a bit earlier. So my question is - 1) how accurate would this negative be? 2) should I be retested at 26/28 d using the ELISA

Many thanks

Best
R.

Hi

Protected intercourse is not low risk, its simply no HIV risk at all.
HIV can not transmit through an intact condom, the only reason you would have a risk is if the condom would have failed and when condoms do they shred and leave no doubt.

Since that did not happen move on with your life and continue to use condoms.

Here's what you need to know in order to avoid hiv infection:
Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, every time, no exceptions.

Keep in mind that some sexual practices which may be described as ‘safe’ in terms of HIV transmission might still pose a risk for transmission of other STI's, so please do get fully tested regularly and at least yearly for all STI's including but not limited to HIV and test more frequently if unprotected intercourse occurs

Also note that it is possible to have an STI and show no signs or symptoms and the only way of knowing is by testing.

More information on HIV Basics, PEP, TaSP and Transmission can be found through the links in my signature to our POZ pages, this includes information on HIV Testing

Kind regards

Jim

Dear Jim,

Thank you for your quick and insightful reply.

I was hoping to ask a follow up question if possible. Does it matter if we also had unprotected mutual oral sex and mutual masturbation? I don't recall there being cuts or sores anyone on my body but I did have a sore throat from a cold I had a few days ago.

Many thanks again

Best,
R.

Hi

Still no risk for HIV.

Mutual masturbation
To explain sexually HIV is transmitted inside the confides of the human body as in never leaving the body as HIV is too fragile to transmit once exposed, small changes in temperature, pH / moisture levels all damage the virus and render it unable to infect. It also next to being noninfectious in this state to start with it would also lack quantity

Unprotected mutual oral I am presuming the name Robert means your the dude asking in this case from the M/F couple.

Getting a BJ
Getting your penis sucked is not a HIV risk, saliva is not infectious, it also contains over a dozen elements that neutralize HIV. Hence there hasn’t been a single documented case of HIV transmission to an insertive partner (the person being "sucked") and you will not be the first.

Cunnilingus
The fluid a woman produces when sexually excited comes from the Bartholin's glands, this is a lubricating fluid and does not have any more hiv present than other bodily secretions such as saliva, sweat or tears. Saliva, sweat and tears are not infectious fluids. Simple Cunnilingus does not meet the biological requirements for HIV transmission.

cuts/sores and a cold
Robert - really  ::) - Look its not a risk, unless the sore was open and on the end of your penis during unprotected sex. You reported protected sex so no concern move on.

Use condoms and do get fully tested at least yearly for all STI's including but not limited to HIV.

Jim
