Yesterday, with the heat index around 100 degrees, was the 2011 Bubba 'Lympics. It's this kind of sophisticated culture event that has put Greensboro on the map.

It was as surreal as it gets in our part of North Carolina. But here they were, hundreds of people sweating in summer’s oven, cheering on 11 locals gunning for $1,000, race tickets and a plunger spray-painted gold.

They were Bubba-’Lympians, competing in Rock 92’s 11th annual Bubba’Lympics at Wet ’n Wild Emerald Pointe. They came carrying names like Fat Boy, T-Bone, Old Dirty Possum and Bubbalicious Fat Baby.

Call it professional wrestling without the ring. They bellowed, whooped and trash-talked as they competed in six events only a radio station like WKRR (92.3 FM) could dream up.

They danced, tossed toilet seats and played musical chairs with rafts. They carved Spam into stock cars and cannon-balled into a pool from 18 feet in the air. They bobbed for pigs’ feet, pickled and red, in at least 2 inches of water.
