ARS sympthoms
« on: June 19, 2012, 01:17:55 pm »
Hello everybody in the forum.
I'm concerned about a sexual encounter I have on 29th of April with a CSW. I'm male, 34 years old. I am not sure what I did that night becouse I was I little drunk. I belive I used a condom but It isn't 100% sure I did.
5 weeks later on 3rd of June I developed a 5 days fever on the range of 38-39ºC with all over the body rash. I did't have a shoretroat and did not have muscle aches, just the fever and the rash as I understand.
I feel better now, but I have the feeling like my liver is inflamed.

Do you think folks the ARS can start 5 weeks post exposure? That's my question and it's killing me all over the day. I heve read many webs and some say it starts between 1 and 3 wks and some others between 2 and 6 weeks so I don't know if my symthoms can be related to ARS or some other deseases.

Thanks you all for your replies.

Marcos, we have a rule in this forum that members should keep all entries in the same thread. Your previous ones were in the Spanish forum and quite a while ago so I am going to leave this thread open. In the future you need to know that you should only be writing in this same thread. Thanks for your cooperation.

Nothing you are reporting symptomatically is in anyway HIV specific. But then neither the presence nor the absence of symptoms will ever tell you anything reliably about your HIV status. Only an HIV specific test at the right time (3 months) after a risk will give you that answer.

Probably you did use a condom but HIV status is not something to guess about. Get tested at 3 months after the event and collect what I expect will most likely be a negative result.

The real red flag in your story is that you were drunk enough at the time to not recall with certainty whether you used a condom or not. Mixing excessive drinking and casual sex is a definitely to be avoided.

Get tested and clear up your doubts. Chances are you will come out of this ok.

Hello Andy,
I Opened a new thread because this is a new matter. I don't want to break up the forum's rules. Sorry If I did.
I know my mistake was to drink so much as I do not remember what I did right and what not. Now I can't go back in my mind to look for any detail of this episode.
My question is so simple as I did before. Do you think 5 weeks is on the range to start up ARS sympthoms? Anyone can help?
I know you can't rely in your sympthoms to find out if you were infected or not, some people do not even have any sympthom at all after being infected but I still want to know if this is normal for ARS to show that late or it normally happens before. That's it. I try to get strong enought to take me to lab and get tested.

The average time to seroconversion is 22 days. All but the smallest number of those who are going to seroconvert will have done so within 4-6 weeks after an exposure. If you decide to test at 6 weeks and get a negative, that will be a very strong indication that you will continue to test negative for a conclusive result at 3 months.

Hello again,

I finally went to the lab and get tested. The result is ( In spanish):
"Antígeno P24 y anticuerpos HIV (1+2) - Negativo". It's been 9 weeks almost since what I believe it was a risk. What do you think? I feel better today, I mean, I have been waitting the whole day to open the results becouse I was so scared and I finally get the strength to open it.
I have been trough this before some times, but this time I was pretty sure I got it. I had every single sympthom you can read on internet about ARS... Fever, sking rush, adenopaties, soretroaht, etc... And I can tell you now Yo can not believe in your sympthoms, just believe in your acts ( If  you can remember them :o).
Today, I start thinking right now that sympthoms are not reliable to find out if you were infected or not.
I will test again for sure in 3 or 4 weeks time but I think if my "ARS related sympthoms" started on the beginig of June I would have  some antibodies running on my blood right now.... Don't you think so?

A negative at almost 9 weeks is extremely strong assurance that you will test negative again at 3 months for a conclusive negative result.

Which is what I expect will happen to you.

Thanks Andy. I hope so. I think I think I still have a chance with HIV. Next time I will try not to drink so much as I can't remember anything. You already gave me a good council. I will try to follow you.
