How conclusive are my results?
« on: July 22, 2017, 01:11:54 pm »
Hi, three weeks ago my condom broke while I was having sex (I was topping).  My partner told me he was hiv+ so I started pep (was prescribed truvada only).  The same doctor who prescribed me pep had me go back yesterday (three weeks after the incident) and take another hiv test which came back negative.

I was so nervous that I forgot to ask them what type of test I had taken, whether the test was conclusive or not, and if not what are the chances of testing positive a few weeks from now.  Unfortunately the clinic is closed over the weekend.

What's your opinion based on the info provided?

Thanks in advance for your response!

Most experts advise that testing for HIV antibodies be conducted at six weeks past exposure, then at 13 weeks past exposure for confirmation of the six week results.

PEP is highly effective, and since you are on it and your tests so far have indicated that you are negative, it is likely that your will continue to be negative.

Work with your healthcare provider until you are told that your HIV test is conclusive.

Thanks for your reply.  I got tested yesterday (exactly 30 days after the incident) with an HIV RNA 4th generation test, which come back negative (non reactive).

Can I consider this conclusive, considering that I was also undergoing PEP (started within 48 hrs, with Truvada only)?

Thanks.

Hi

I presume you either mean a 4th gen test or a RNA test?

Either way test at 6 weeks & 13 weeks post finishing pep with an antibody test.
Giving you started pep on time and its was just a condom break i would fully expect a negative result but test to confirm.

Remember to do full sti & hiv testing as routine and at least yearly going forward. You may also want to consider PrEP as additional layer of protection (links can be found in my signature)
