The Dark Knight Rises
« on: August 10, 2012, 03:08:07 am »
Apologies if there's already a thread discussing the movie (not the horrific shootings), I couldn't find it though.

I saw it some time ago.

Some general thoughts:

-Pretty good, but I thought The Dark Knight (2008) was definitely a notch superior. The story was gripping and the dialogue was quirky in parts.

-I couldn't get over Anne Hathaway as cat woman. I kept thinking she'd break into some chick flick dialogue. I think she said somewhere that this was her most physically demanding role, and that sure came across.   ;D

-Also, it seems Christopher Nolan has used half of his Inception cast for this movie (Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt-> I like him though).

-The Bane meanie character came nowhere close to Heath Ledger's avatar of the Joker.

- I perceived some pro-capitalist, conservative overtones from the movie, but I may have read too much into it.

-I'm glad Christian Bale is done with Batman.

I haven't seen it yet but I never liked Batman Bale. Michael Keaton did a great job and he is for me the real Batman.

The Dark Knight was in his defense thou more than OK, but mostly because of Ledger.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

While, as previously stated numerous times, I am not fond of the endless stream of superhero franchise films and their prequels and sequels, or the crowds that attend said films, I am considering seeing this movie only because there's an entire hour (compared to only 28 minutes in the previous film) of it shot specifically in 70mm, and it would look really good in not just any IMAX screen, but specifically the extra large ones at a science museum. And the one near my apartment is actually an IMAX "Dome" 180-degree screen.

Not clear. Did you LIKE Anne Hathaway or were you unconvinced?  I thought she did well and the character was fun and interesting to watch.  About the only one in the movie, for that matter.

And she was anti-capitalist.

Here is an essay that makes a gung-ho argument for the pro-capitalist meaning of the film:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/filmblog/2012/jul/17/dark-knight-rises-capitalist-superhero

I thought the French Revolution inspired "Terror" trials were rather muddy, politically, but basically we got the impression they were clearing out the greedy 1%.  But, as with the French Terror, there was a lot of collateral damage and it was bound to spin into anarchy.

In retrospect - after the villian's motivation in occupying Gotham is revealed - most of the plot turns out to be nothing to do with capitalism or rich versus poor.

So the Terror trials theme seems like an odd tangent.  And makes sense just as presented - Gotham was sick and tired of the ruling elite even if the police state + the ruling elite combo had made Gotham rather safe.  The gap between have and have nots was unsupportable.

The beginning of the movie sets a up a fairly good anti-1% theme.

I'm not convinced that Bruce Wayne is representative of capitalism, as you and the essay above, assume.  Daggett is immoral ruthless capitalism.

Bruce Wayne feels and looks very very old money, and is more of a Roosevelt type, mixed with a British gentry vibe, and not, say, a Jay Gould Robber Baron, or I dunno, Romney.   Wayne invests his money on socially redeeming projects, and secretly to supply Batman his gadgets.  And Batman is for the good and the common man.

Oh I do like her and I kind of enjoyed her in this role, but I was a tad amused. Initially I felt it was a bit forced, but she did a good job overall and never made an ass of herself.

Yep, I felt certain aspects of the movie (such as the excessive servility of Alfred to Bruce for example) did ring of an apology for the elitist classes.

But this statement from the guardian article is just ludicrous. LOL.

The Dark Knight Rises is a quite audaciously capitalist vision, radically conservative, radically vigilante, that advances a serious, stirring proposal that the wish-fulfilment of the wealthy is to be championed if they say they want to do good. Mitt Romney will be thrilled. What's strange is that quite so many of the rest of us seem to want to buy into it

Well Wayne Manor, Alfred and all that, seem to me direct imports from British culture and its all very odd in a American fable.  But Bruce Wayne/Batman are fantasy characters and Wayne is benevolent. I didn't get the hyperbolic leftist interpretation of the Guardian saying it the film is finally a wet dream for the capitalist class.

Well, maybe Bill Gates type billionaires who put there money into humanist and progressive work.  Bill Gates might admire something about Wayne/Batman. Certainly not the Koch Brothers... They really seem dead set on almost Libertarian Dystopia.

How about a Batman movie that is a mash up with Atlas Shrugged?

It was ok, not bad, but not great.  I actually almost fell asleep about 45 minutes in. It's just so difficult to try to pull off a Batman after Heath Ledgers performance as Joker.
