Welcome to Do I Have HIV?

Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Anyone who needs to post more than three messages in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum -- including past, present and future POZ Forums members -- will need to subscribe, with secure payments made via PayPal.

PrEP and bareback

Hi peeps,

I am a gay guy and have been on PrEP for 45 days now and haven't skipped a single dose, I recently had sex and decided to go bareback and the guy came inside me twice. Though the guy did say he is tested every 6 months which I do believe, I was curious to know if being on PrEP I have sex with someone and he came inside me, what are my chances of getting hit by the virus!!

I am on a generic version of Truvada called Tenvir EM by Cipla.

The guy is 100% negative and STD free and so am I STD free. We both barebacked because of the trust factor and both are tested - Me at every 3 months and him at every 6 months.

Hiya

The guys claimed status & testing history are irrelevant.

Anyhow yes if PrEP was taken correctly its a near negligible HIV risk but as a PrEP user you should be testing more frequently for STI's & HIV anyway so simply test whenever next due your routine 3 monthly checkup.

If I took his load and I am on PrEP and take it daily without missing a dose, as per CDC my protection level is more than 99% while on PrEP, I know it doesn't save me from getting an STI but does it save me from getting HIV??

Hiya,

PrEP if taken correctly is highly effective against HIV although no guarantee and, part of the reason why more frequent screening is recommended.

Overall I see no reason to panic if what you posted is accurate, simply test whenever next normally due for your routine STI/HIV screenings as PrEP user.

Here's what you need to know in order to avoid HIV infection:
Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, every time, no exceptions. Keep using PrEP as an additional layer of HIV protection

Keep in mind that some sexual practices which may be described as ‘safe’ in terms of HIV transmission might still pose a risk for transmission of other STI's, so please do get fully tested regularly and at least yearly for all STI's including but not limited to HIV and test more frequently if unprotected intercourse occurs

Also, note that it is possible to have an STI and show no signs or symptoms and the only way of knowing is by testing.
