I voted have you?
« on: November 02, 2010, 09:03:56 am »
Busy polling location for me, which is always a good sign where I am concerned.  However, overall afraid it will be a long night.  Regardless of who you vote for, it is important to participate.  If you don't vote you shouldn't bitch.  Goodness knows I have had plenty to bitch about over the years.  GO VOTE!

I voted early, and when I tried to vote again, they said I wasn't allowed.

I agree, if you don't vote, don't bitch.

Same for me in KY where we will probably send Rand Paul a true teabagger and the man who is a member, according to info released by the Ky Democratic Party, of a medical organization that doesn't believe HIV is the cause of AIDS.  My only solice is that I do live in the bluest of blue areas in the entire state.

I dutifully walked the two blocks to my polling place, and only had to wait behind one person to sign in, and then no wait to go into one of the two machines.  Voting wards in Philadelphia are made small and are efficient -- we only have ~500 registered people in my ward.  My congressional district is one of the most liberal in the country so I'd not be surprised if 80% are registered Democrats.  Republicans don't even bother running anyone against us in this district :)

I voted last week (we're a vote by mail state).  We've got a very close Senate race, the outcome of which may not be known for several days (we don't have to have our ballots in by today they only have to be post marked today--which means some ballots may not arrive till Wed or Thurs).

Voted early this morning...  for all the good it will do.  I am destined to be "represented" by that horrible Eric Cantor for 2 more years -- and, most likely, as the House Majority Leader.  UGH!

His ads were nuts, they would prattle on about how "Washington just doesn't get it.........", missing the point that HE HAS BEEN THE HOUSE FOR 10 YEARS -- so he's part of what "doesn't get it".  He also wouldn't do a debate because he was "focusing on the business of the House" -- of course he said this from a BOOK SIGNING, for his new bit of crap.  Anyway -- vent over, I feel better.

Yep, I cast my ballot after I got out of class. Straight Democrat ticket for me. They may not be perfect, but I'd rather have them than those Republicans.

Yup, the local news said they would have results around 10:30.....I hope the Democrats can pull thru.

Did anyone hear Obama on the radio? We were trying to remember if anyother presidents every called into local stations and shot the shit? He seems like such a cool, laidback guy that knows what means and means what he says( I hope anyway)
I don't remember Bush ever doing that?

I voted about 7:20 this morning - wasn't real busy, but slow - because the poll workers were just getting used to the routine - and since our whole "hanging chad" issue here in Florida - they don't make it a very easy or "user-friendly" process.  Have to stand in line to verify and sign in, then to another line to get the ballot, then to another line to wait for a privacy booth to fill out the ballet, then to another line to load the ballet into the scanner....

How pathetic.  I sign in and go right into an electronic voting booth, then exit.  Didn't take me more than five minutes.

It is pathetic. We had the electronic computer touch screens about 6 years ago - then the state didn't like them because they wanted to have a paper trail -so they went to a blended model - which is really time consuming.

Yez, Yez, we voted!  It is a shame we couldn't vote in 3 states just for grins.  Make a whirlwind tour. ;D  Please explain to me the Republican  and tea Bag agenda again....... Less government, less taxes, but they don't want less social security, or a smaller military, or poor highways, or less medicare,  or falling down schools with no teachers, or no cops, ambulance or fire protection...... Did these people all fail math in school?  Did they  skip debate class to smoke pot on the street corner?   Then their bright star is Sarah Palin.... who quit her job as governor instead of doing all this  cutting she jabbers about,  then she took a right turn off an open drawbridge splashing face down into the bay  and hooking up with the tea baggers...... ???  where am I missing the common sense in all this?   Damn... 7:25 P.M.   Just when I finally remembered to go by the cemetary and look for fresh graves for names to use to go back to the polls.... and now the damn polls are closed.  :o Damn that Alzheimers anyway.  ::) Good thing  the Republicans and Tea baggers think they are so special that they have set aside separate days for them to vote.  Next Thursday , the day before football Friday and the following Monday after they have had all day Sunday to recover from their Saturday night bender.  :P  Hope everyone had a great day!

Most Dems ran terrible campaigns.  They were afraid to talk about all the accomplishments.  This has been the most productive Congress since President Johnson.  They refused to talk about Equal Pay for Women, Credit Reform, Health Reform, Saving GM, the Stimulus that kept us from going into a Great Depression and which about 40% were tax cuts, Student Loan Reform, Federal Hate Crime Law, and so on.

Obama and the Dems just didn't sell their accomplishments.  Obama doesn't like sound bites, but that is what works.  Bush gave out checks that people could hold and see.  Obama preferred to do it through payroll where people don't really notice it.  They should have run in to the ground how we were losing over 700,000 jobs a month when Obama took office.  Yes, the party in power usually looses seats in the mid-terms, but I think we could have controlled the damage more.

Here in KY, Jack Conway talked more about prescription drug abuse in Eastern KY than just about anything else.  Voters could care less about poor people being hooked on Oxy.  So, Kentucky just elected a man who believes shop owners should have the right to deny service to Blacks, gays, or anyone.  He has said Social Security and Medicare should be done away with and then said Medicare should have a $2k deductible.  I'll be very interested to see if KY catches on to Paul--but that is 6 long years away.

Here in Florida - it is a tight race between conservative Rep. Rick Scott and Democrat Alex Sink (who would be Florida's first ever female governor if elected) --- Not going to be good if Scott gets elected.  And, the thing is the company he was CEO of had the biggest Medicare fraud payback in US history and he took the fifth amendment over 70 times when he was deposed for the fraud case.....   unbelievable.

Gotta love the eastern part of KY, I got lost once and ended up in a place called Lovely.  Lovely it wasn't!  Even the children scared me.  Luckily, I managed to find a place called Inez where the roads headed north and south.  I didn't even care which direction I was going, I just wanted away from there.

In Florida, Alan Grayson lost.  We are still wondering who the next governor will be, but it will most likely be that criminal Rick Scott. Marco Rubio also won over Charlie Crist and Kendrick Meek

It is pathetic. We had the electronic computer touch screens about 6 years ago - then the state didn't like them because they wanted to have a paper trail -so they went to a blended model - which is really time consuming.

The electronic voting machines can be very easily tampered with.  PBS did an excellenct documentary (I'll try and find and and post a link) on how easily they can be tampered with,  even if they produce a receipt.  The paper ballots with optical scanner are by far the most accurate and safest form of voting machine available.  Plus you have a paper trail in the event of a recount.  That's why they changed over.

I'd rather have to wait in line for hours and have my vote counted than have a computer hack erase my vote on a touchscreen machine.

With all the problems that FL had in the 2000 elections with voting machines,  the only counties that didn't have a problem were the ones with paper ballots and optical scanners

Not that it really mattesr this year.   :(   Everyone I voted for lost.

I'm on the same page as jg...a democrat in Alabama.   Voting is just an exercise in futility for us.

I heard President Carter say that maybe it will be a good thing that Repub's have taken the House; now, they may actually have to PROPOSE some legislation, rather than just voting NO to everything...thus, they will share in the 'blame' for the mess we're in (even though they got us here, IMHO).

I foresee them spending the rest of Obama's first term trying to "repeal" health care.   Brilliant move.... :'(

I do the payroll at my place of employment; every single person here got their taxes LOWERED under President Obama, by less payroll tax deductions.  But I have never heard one single person comment on it...

It's all part of the 'dumbing down' of America.   So many of the teabaggers are low - mod. income earners, and obviously (by reading the signs they displayed at rallies) not the most educated of folks... yet they will vote against their own best interests.   I will go to my grave trying to figure this out.

Oh, and big shout out to Christine O'Donnell for helping to keep a Dem. in office.  Woo hoo !

Many of us think that, however surveys reveal that tea party members are actually better educated and have higher incomes than other voters.  Here is a CNN poll:  http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2010/images/02/17/rel4b.pdf

Yes thank goodness for Christine O'Donnell not only for helping the Democrats maintain control of the Senate but for the good laughs she provided us!

There will be much proper analysis this week in the news, but as I suspected this is a huge reason Dem's didn't win in many areas, including PA:

http://www.slate.com/id/2273378/

Quote
One of the big assumptions the Democratic Party made this year was that President Obama could turn out the young voters who had voted for him in 2008—and there was no state in which Democrats tried harder to turn out this vote than Ohio. Nationwide, young voters did not turn out this time around. Only 11 percent of those under 30 turned out, below the 18 percent of the 2008 election and the 13 percent who turned out in 2006. In Ohio, the young vote was even more dismal. There, only 8 percent of young voters are voting. In 2006, exit polls showed that 13 percent of young voters turned out in Ohio.

The media will still focus largely on the teabaggers though.

It's entirely possible that I'm reading this wrong but you're mad about hiring Fireman and builidng Gymsnasiums?

-W

No I am pissed about the hypocrasy of them wanting less taxes ... at least that is what they  beat drums to  ALL campaign season long and get elected for,  yet the same people that elect these people also vote FOR  tax INCREASES to build gynasiums and to hire firemen to staff  firehouses.

O'Donnell loss was the biggest NON-SURPRISE of the night.

I mean, anytime a political candidate starts an ad with "I am NOT a witch...." -- they are pretty much done!

Of course, let's not forget about Nevada -- Sen. Reid would have lost to anyone else this year except the nut-job teabagger who actually said that a some of the Hispanics in the audience she was speaking to looked "asian to her"?

Yes, the Republicans got screwed out of the Senate by the same train they see as their ticket to dominance......

I got some enjoyment out of the returns... CBS 5 (San Francisco) was covering Meg Whitman's gathering in Los Angeles.  He referred to former California Governor Pete Wilson (R) as former Governor Gray Davis (D), they do resemble each other but no one caught the error.

It was pointed out that she (Meg Whitman) spent $141 M on advertising and consultants.  One of her consultants made more money on her campaign than Jerry Brown's entire staff of 12.  This election will not be forgotten because both Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina failed to connect with the voters and proved they couldn't buy the Governors office or the Senate office in California.  As of last night, Jerry Brown has been elected as Governor of California 3 times, once as the youngest California Governor in the 20th century and now the oldest.  This should be the end of political careers for both Ms. Whitman and Ms. Fiorina.   ;D  Have the best day

Politicians are designed to take ridicule from the people they represent.  I remember Speaker Wilbur Mills in the 1970's.  He was caught frolicking in a Washington DC fountain with a prostitute, the country was screaming for impeachment.  Not his home state because he was Speaker of the House and Wilbur was entitled to have his fun.

I took some classes one year in Ukiah and met Dan Hamburg who taught poly sci 101 and in his teaching the idea was talked about that the shortest route to the White House was to be the Governor of a large state or a Senator from a small state and to be a veteran of a popular war.  Dan Hamburg ran for Governor of California on the Green Party ticket against Gray Davis.  I voted for Gray Davis, not my instructor.

Also in another lifetime, I met Congressman Richard Mountjoy.  We were speaking to the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce on ways to reduce workers' comp claims.  He later came on my radio talk show several times.  I still believe he was the savior of the California employer on workers' comp issues.  He ran for Barbara Boxer's Senate seat on the GOP ticket and I voted for Senator Boxer over my respected guest.

There was some discussion on the CBS 5 news last night that Nancy Pelosi is 70 years old and she may retire, go home to San Francisco and those grand children.   ;D  Have the best day

I was most upset that NBC/MSNBC didn't use their regular election music.  Instead they use some primetime drama type music.  I am so pissed over this   ;)

I especially love the part at min 1:09.  They used that for election returns.  Very dramatic and suspenseful.

Exit poll: Nearly a third of gays voted for GOP

By Liz Goodwin
Thu Nov 4, 10:47 am ET

Exit polling commissioned by the major cable news networks has found that 31 percent of people who identified as gay, lesbian or bisexual voted for Republicans on Election Day. That represents a big uptick from the 24 percent of gays who voted for the GOP in 2006 and from only 19 percent who did so in 2008. The trend appears to bear out pre-Election Day predictions from gay rights organizers that gay voters were angry and disenchanted with Democrats for not delivering on promises to the community.

It's not clear how widespread the trend is. Hunter College Professor Ken Sherrill, who studies the gay electorate, tells The Upshot that the sample size was small, so the magnitude of gays' shift toward the GOP may be less pronounced than it appears. (About 110 respondents of the 3,700 included in the cable exit polls identified as gay, lesbian or bisexual, representing about 3 percent of all voters.)

He also thinks the shift is more related to the economic downturn than to dissatisfaction with the pace of gay-rights legislation, since there was no reason for voters to believe GOP candidates would be more amenable than Democrats to LGBT issues such as gay marriage or ending the military ban on openly gay service.

"There's no good reason to suggest that the shift was greater than the shift in the electorate as a whole," Sherrill said. "Given there is every reason to believe that LGB voters were as affected or more affected by the economic downturn, it's not surprising to see a shift."

(UPDATE: After reviewing the full data, Sherrill says there was a disproportionate drop in Democratic support among LGB voters compared to Hispanic, black, and young voters. Though the sample size is still very small and thus there's a large margin of error, Sherrill now says the drop may be attributed to "dissatisfaction with the pace of change on LGB rights over the past two years.")

Even with the shift, gay voters remain among the top five demographic groups that vote Democratic.

Jimmy LaSalvia, the executive director of GOProud, a group that represents gay conservatives, told Tim Mak of FrumForum: "Gay and lesbian voters are just like other voters in the electorate -- many of them are astonished about the growth in government, and the misguided priorities of this administration. These numbers don't surprise me at all."

I think Sherrill's analysis is right on target.  Of all the gay friends I have that I keep up with through personal conversations, Facebook postings and such not one gave any indication that they would vote for Rand Paul, Rep. John Yarmuth's opponent or mayorial candidate Hal Heiner who was a fierce opponent of Louisville Fairness.  I will be perfectly honest and some might say closed minded, but I cannot see myself ever, ever voting for a Republican no matter how dissatisfied I am with the Democratic candidate, I would search for other party candidates if need be.  And it is not just LGBT issues, because the way I was raised, my career and my faith I have a completely different ideas than those of the Republican party.

I voted straight Democrat but I would be open to voting Republican if the candidate and circumstances were right, particularly in local elections. Personally I believe the American 2-party system is inherently flawed but that is what we are stuck with.

I would also except I can never see the candidate and circumstances changing to where we would have similar beliefs.  Good point on the local elections, could see it happening there.

Yep, I cast my ballot after I got out of class. Straight Democrat ticket for me. They may not be perfect, but I'd rather have them than those Republicans.

Our balloting was slightly laborous in that there was NO straight ticket voting.  We were talking about it when we came home.  Used to vote straight DEMOCRAT.  We both did the same thing.... voted for each DEMOCRAT...  in races where there was no democrat running... we did NOT give the republicans a vote.

Ummm ...the idea that this "Update" provides additional useful information is absolute and utter statistical nonsense.  Statistical results based on small samples do not gain credibility when compared to other subsets of the same data.  Credibililty goes down when you compare subsets, not up.

Basically you are looking at a poll of a little more than 100 LGB self-identified voters every two years (and not the same voters from year to year) and tryng to abstract voting data down to the level of 1 person at 1% .  Good luck with that...

The Seattle Times is now calling the Washington Senate race for Sen. Patty Murray (D).  That would put the Senate at 53-47, a little better than most of the pundits had predicted.

I'm so happy to have a fellow Louisvillian here.  Hal Heiner, the repub candidate for mayor, seemed so nice and upbeat in his commercials.  I wasn't fooled.  John Yarmuth won re-election and was one of very few who didn't run away from Obama and the accomplishments.  He embraced them.  He does represent a district that is 2 to 1 democrat.  However, we did have evil Anne Northup for 10 years--who Yarmuth beat in 2006.
