Question about living with HIV
« on: February 21, 2021, 01:25:24 am »
Hey everyone, hope we are doing well! I'm newly diagnosed (10 days ago) and still have a ton of questions, so this is my go to place. I already have a noticeable difference in my energy levels since starting biktarvy 10 days ago, but was curious to know what kind of symptoms, if any, should I expect even with treatment while living with HIV.

I no longer feel the flu-like symptoms prior to treatment, but I know the virus can still cause inflammation even with treatment. My biggest annoyance prior to being diagnosed was the emergence of random low grade fevers and excessive day sweating and mild night sweats. The day sweating in particular was insane and I felt like I was having what I imagine a hot flash feels like. My hair would look like I splashed water on it. Fortunately the day sweating has diminished a bit, but isn't quite gone. I'm a server at a fine dining restaurant, so excessive sweating is not the best look when dropping off dinner to a table lol. Anyway, should I expect some symptoms to reemerge occasionally even with strict adherence to medication? I'm just trying to gauge what I'm in for.

Hiya.

Should you be expecting continued symptoms like sweaty flu-like energy low issues from your HIV?

The short answer is, No, you should not expect that once you get the virus suppressed through the treatment, and keep it that way. Of course, just like our HIV negative peers, you will get colds, bugs and other illnesses from time to time.

You are starting treatment relatively early with great lab results and a robust immune system.  ;) The VL was already low so hopefully, you will see a quick reduction and HIV then can't uncontrolled continue to do measured and unmeasured damage to you.

I know the answer on energy levels can be far more complex as an example for those members who let's say fall into other subgroups/categories within the community and/or have diffrent treatment histories.
