Maybe I haven't been around the HIV "scene" long enough, but I found myself a little discouraged, there don't seem to have been any significant advances in medications, the way there were over the last couple years. Did I miss something?

I still remember when the conference was held here in 1996, so much optimism with the advent of HAART. It seems a lifetime ago.

I think you just put your finger on why there has been some over-hype of other announcements and findings that really don't merit such attention.

Nothing may seem as comparable to the announcements of HAART in the 90's because frankly that was such a watershed moment in treatment that nothing is of yet as comparable to that breakthrough.

Unfortunately, I believe too many think that every development needs to be connected to such a sense of a game-changer that they miss the idea that maybe it's no longer about changing the game for most of us as we are already winning with the slow but steady improvements in both the years and quality added to our lives.

To put it another way, I agree that 1996 seems like a lifetime ago, but that is in many ways the point.

BTW - I hope you don't take my thoughts as being about you - I'm musing in general about the idea of the need for excitement withtreatment developments by many.

And once I read up on the Viread article I may discuss switching from Truvada to Intelence with my doctor, as I've been on it for a long time, and I'm also on high blood pressure medication which according to that article increases my risk factor for kidney damage. I'm probably safe though as we've not seen any funky stuff in lab results, but I want to know my options, etc.

Frankly treatment has improved immeasurably for those of us that have been on long-term treatment, and I think some of you that are either not yet on meds or have only been for a short time don't realize how beneficial these small increments will be for you down the road.

Agreed and as someone in the recently started category, I hope I didn't come across as minimizing the advances. Wasn't my intention.
