Are there pharmacies?  Can you give me the name of these pharmacies?

I was curious which one TNdude used but if you want other names of pharmacies, go to the links of previous threads in my posts, above

You take Atripla but still your CD doesn't go beyond 324.  Why is that?  Are you not faithfull (not taking your med consistently) to your treatment or is it because of your cholesterol or other diseases you have?

Is there a place locally that accepts unused meds that are sealed that will stay in the US?? I have a lot of unopened bottles of meds for HIV and hate to throw them away.

a "low" cd4 doesn't have to be "caused" by anything really. It could simply be that his baseline count of cd4s before HIV was always on the low end of "normal". Or it could be because his tcells were so low when he was diagnosed and began treatment that his cd4 count has never greatly recovered.

my cd4s were as low as 5. After 18 yrs of meds, my tcells have only gone over 300 twice (305,122); yet I haven't been back in the hospital in over a decade.

though you should have started your own thread about this  ;) instead of hijacking this one,
try using http://directory.poz.com/ to find a local ASO to call about your unused meds

hey Metekrop, LOL I've been very faithful [and adherent] to Atripla. Leatherman hit the nails squarely. Am one of the 'lucky' bums who probably has a low threshold of normal CD4 and definitely was depleted [note down to 6 but relatively low VL]. More luck in having only one mutation, no sensitivity to any ARV's, and quick VL descent to undetectable with treatment. Though I've seen elevated chol and trig [Sustiva part??] and decreased bone mass [Truvada part??], I've been increasingly healthy ... knock wood... my immune system 'as is' is fairly defiant. Had concerns earlier about my CD4's but seeing the positive progression and doing well alleviated my fears. Will see how my luck is going with my labs in a couple of weeks. Am also 'lucky' since am one of those whose fever is low-grade ... 99+ to me feels like others feel who have 101 or more. LOL

Was interesting to see the various pricing for Atripla ...and incensed that these drugs are so darn overpriced!!

I am new to this site/forum... I find what I am reading almost unbelievable....
I am an American living in Central America/hiv.  The first year I was paying a huge sum of money being on Stockrin and Combivir... My doctor then found Atripla in two of our neighboring countries...
Now I am paying as little as $75/month or as much as $115/month depending on where I go. This is "Atripla", not a generic.  My doctor has warned me to stay away from any generic version.  I walk into their warehouse office, place my order, pay cash or credit card, and pic up my meds on the way out....clockwork....and upon returning to my country of residence, I am not asked one word abuot my meds....
I have to wonder why in the USA, the same drug, Atripla, is so expensive???
I am selling my property in Central America and moving back to the states... I am totally unfamiliar with the system and what to expect, but I can easily see from this forum  that a $300-$400 plane fare to Central America once a year to buy my meds will be far cheaper for me in the long run, than the US prices and limited anxiety of being approved or denied by some agency and/or running out of meds...
Can someone make a recommendation for me?  Medicare?  HIV Centers???
Thanks.... until then, I will keep buying my meds in Central America....
Would it not make sense to take turns, share expenses in travelling to Central America to buy a quantity to share with friends??? Or would we be busted?

Hello guys,

I am new to this site and I want to ask the same question, I was able to get Atripla through a state program which really helped me through last year that I wasn't able to work for the most part of it.

Now that I got a job and insurance I no longer qualify for that program and I will have to use my insurance, this is the first time ever and I have no clue if they'd cover it or not and how I would end up paying.

My insurance kicks in this month and not sure what to ask or what to tell the insurance company and I'm scared to stop taking Atripla for a while.

It is Aetna Choice POS II and in the prescription drug description it says Generic $15, Preferred $30, and Nonpreferred $50 copay.

Thanks and have a wonderful day!

Mauricio

Certainly is eyeopening info about the price of real Atripla in different countries.

Since I have employer based insurance, my copay for my atripla is included in the premium I pay to my states HIV fund. In turn, they cover the copays for my medicine, and the copays for everything else (doctor visits, tests, vision, ladeeda). So, my medicine costs me about 44 bucks a month.

Got my refill for my Atripla today and since my insurance changed, I am back (for now) to getting it filled at the local Walgreen's.  My copay is now $60 for 30-day supply and the receipt with the meds says my insurance saved me $1,846.09 (so total price with copay would be $1,906.09 or $63.53 a pill) ---- price just seems to keep going up.

The co-pay assistance program would cover that $60.

If you apply for it now you can send the receipt and be reimbursed for the one you already paid for and the ones in the future you would just not pay anything when you pick it up.

Do they have an income limit to qualify for the copay assistance that you know of?

It has nothing to do with income. It's for people who have private insurance and have a co-pay. It's paid for by the pharmaceutical companies so it's good to take advantage of it, they're making billions from these meds. The one for Atripla/Truvada is like a credit card and when you give it to the pharmacist they use it to get reimbursed and charge you zero (it covers up to $200. per month).

I'm pretty sure there's a 30-day or 60-day period during which you can submit the ones you have paid for out of pocket for reimbursement, you mail them the receipt. When you call for your card you can ask them about that.

I have atriplas copay assistance.  My insurance charges me $100 and atripla covers that so there is no out of pocket cost.  There was no income qualifying either.  Just called them up and they sent me a card.  Was easy as pie.

The swiss pharmacy and the swiss insurance company never batted an eyelash about the cost of sustiva+truvada nor any other combo I have been on, until Isentress.  Now they write the price of Isentress on everything and I have to sign something.
Oh, my franchise for all medical care is 350 US dollar equivalent, and the maximum copay for a year is 700. Sounds like the deal a lot of Americans get.

???

The cost of Atripla I am taking costs $2200 for one month.  I pay $50 out of this amount and the remaining is covered by my Insurance.  This is too expensive to cover.  But I saw in my computer this cost is like $240 from Canadian pharmacy.  I got there number and call why it is this much cheaper from what I am paying in US.   The person who picks up the phone told me that it is a Generic Artipla which we are selling in cheapest price.  When I ask again the fact that the medicine is generic means should it be this much cheaper?  She answered me that of course the ingredients of these two brands of tablet are the same except some are not present in the generic brand.  And she add up that I can check with my doctor.  So, do you guys know that this is true?  If in case, I lose my work who pays me for my insurance to pay for Atripla, can I resort to this company to get my Atripla?  Do these two brands of medicine fulfill the same purpose equally?  If not how are they different? And which one of these is good ??? ???

In australia its $5.40 a month the govt pays the difference ive only just started last month so i wont know if its working yet

Speaking of building up some backup meds down here in FL....ADAP let's u refill your hiv meds a week before they are due to be refilled. I've been on the same meds for 10yrs so needless to say over that stretch of time i've built up quite a supply of backup medication in case i ever lost access to them. My only fear is resistance to them one day but i usually only miss a dose or two a year so i've been good at keeping away from resistance. I actually took a resistance test a couple of years ago and i have absolutely no resistance to any of the HIV meds out there.

If you are in the US, and lose your job, wouldn't the Ryan White Fund cover most HIV related things while you wait for ADAP?

Ryan White covers HIV related medical expenses and ADAP covers HIV medications so to answer your question no Ryan White would never cover medications until you were eligible for ADAP.

To clarify what Hellraiser has stated, ADAP really is part of the Ryan White Care Act.  Ryan White has several funding streams referred to as Parts A though F.  ADAP is a grant given to states through Part B of Ryan White.

You can read more about these "parts" at this HRSA link:

http://hab.hrsa.gov/aboutus.htm

(and yes it's all confusing)

I buy my Viraday from www.HIVGenericDrugs.com

It is cheaper than Vonavir ( another generic for Atripla made by Emcure pharmaceuticals ).  I've had no problems with my orders there.

I pay $150/bottle.  I know the people in India get Viraday for about $80/bottle at the pharmacies in the country.  I have been taking Viraday for 2 years and no problems.

I just wanted to mention about the patent expiring in 2018.  According to U.S. patent law (this is only in the U.S. mind you), the owner of the patent my petition for 1 additional 11 year extension to the patent if they make a "significant alteration" to the pill.  For example add 10 more milligrams of Tenofovir to the product, or 5 more milligrams of efavirienz to the product, etc...

"Significant Alteration" is a very broad term.  So you can bet they will be filing for an extension on this patent.  Its not that hard to re-formulate this pill.

Check out this from Gilead Sciences reporting on Atripla sales for 2009...

Quote
Atripla
Atripla sales increased 50 percent to $697.8 million for the fourth quarter of 2009, surpassing Truvada sales for the first time, and up from $465.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2008. For 2009, Atripla sales increased 51 percent to $2.38 billion from $1.57 billion in 2008. The increase in Atripla sales in the fourth quarter and full year of 2009 compared to the same periods of 2008 was driven primarily by sales volume growth in the United States and Europe.
You can find the above article here:  http://www.dddmag.com/news-Gilead-Sciences-Announces-Record-Fourth-Quarter-012610.aspx

OH MY GOD....THATS HOW MANY ZERO'S AFTER THOSE NUMBERS ????????????????????????????????

considering these drugs cost less than $1/pill to manufacture these guys must be making "CHA CHING"

So dont bet they're gonna let their patent go ANYTIME SOON!!!!

j, welcome to the forums.

This thread hasn't been posted in since last April. If you have Atripla you wish to donate to someone in need, you should start a new thread about it. Do not ask for money for your meds - we do not appreciate such solicitations here. Thanks!

Ann

on edit -  I see you were already doing what I suggested while I was posting the above. Thanks!
