Anyone Else Get This

I just looked in my alternate email address. One that I go maybe every three months and found this- has anyone else gotten it? I find it weird as this is the only place it is posted.

Received a similar message although I think it was worded differently and joined the forum.  Since I post an email address here at AIDSmeds I fully expect to receive email from such sources.  I deleted 2 other messages to the same account that were about cures without reading them. 

Although there aren't yet 100 members the AIDS2HIV forum seems OK to me, although I still wonder why it isn't HIV2AIDS...

The forum member who goes by the screen-name of AIDS2HIV contacted me on October 13th about this issue and gave me a list of 55 email addresses that he said were spammed. I checked a few random ones out that I didn't recognise as forum members, but they didn't seem to be members. Today I have gone back and checked out the whole list and they are all indeed members here. I was in a rush the previous time I checked and I must have been doing something wrong.

So anyway, of the 55 people who were targeted, 54 still list their emails in their profiles. The one whose email doesn't show must have changed it after this happened.

The thing is, if you want to have your email address showing in your profile on this forum, you have to understand that it is visible to ANYONE who registers here with an account. If you do not want to chance having someone misuse your email address, then you can go into your profile preferences and change it to invisible. Unfortunately we cannot control what people might do with your email address if you chose to have it visible.

Here's how to hide your email address:

Click on the profile button in the row of buttons under the Community Forums logo on the top left hand side of any forum page.

You will now see three columns, two skinny and one fat. Look at the middle column, second section entitled Modify Profile.

Click on Account Related Settings, then scroll down the page until you see the tick box - "Hide email address from public?" Tick the box.

Next, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the Change Profile button. Now your email address will be hidden from view in your profile.  (Don't change your email address, as this will mess up your log in capabilities.)

I do not believe the person who did the spamming knows much about the forum, as some of the people targeted haven't even been here for months. While I don't think AIDS2HIV is the person who did the spamming, we have know way of knowing who DID.

So the moral of the story is, if you don't want spam, don't have your email address visible in your profile. If you want to share your email address with someone, send it to them in a PM.
