chronic stigma?
« on: October 04, 2008, 05:02:45 pm »
Hi, accepting HIV is hard, but am doing a good job I think. I think the hardest thing to come to grips with is the stigma. You go about your business being who you are and doing the things you enjoy. Yet there is a part of you that becomes sad at going about your life and enjoying it because you feel different. Not that you have changed, are scarred, or marked as a walking plague, but due to the fact that people look at HIV in such a negative way. Do you think it will change? HIV is on par with diabetes as a chronic illness yet views dont change. Do you think they ever will and what is your opinion on the best ways to change them?. Because we have to change that for ourselves and for people in the future. Thanks and prayers for all. James

hi James  :),
i did not catch how long you have been POZ .

Things get BETTER , or back to normal .

I FEEL THE VIEWS ARE CHANGING ,even in the backwoods of Missouri people relize

that sometimes things just are what they are .

There will come a time you will not think of HIV ,MOST OF THE TIME .

Not all the time ,but sometimes i forget i even have it .

In day to day  issues dealing with people ,it just does NOT come up !

I am NOT in the  HUNT mode , so sex issues are moot !

BUT regular life and work things are back to normal , NO need to tell anymore !

I went through the " I must tell everyone "  stage ,and i am glad it is over .

First of all MOST people are too self-centered  to really care what's up in your life .

Sad but true ,and i sort of agree with it !

I hope you adjust OK  and work on it .

YOU are NOT damaged  or defective or a bad person ,you are you  and this is the

one thing HIV  can and will NOT ever change !

You sound like you get along very good , SPORTS , oh my :o ,not my bag !

be good , best of moods for you ,

                                         do not be intimadated,

                                                                            karl

ps HIV is NOT on par with diabetes !
as bad as the meds are WE HAVE IT MUCH BETTER THAN A DIABETIC PERSON !

I don't know enough about diabetes to know if that's really so, but the stigma for HIV remains much greater than for diabetes, and not just for sex. Diabetics can still get individual life insurance policies, but don't try that with HIV. That doesn't seem to make any sense given the current state of HIV treatments.

hullo madbrain  :),

speaking from personal experience ,here in the USA  people  with

diabetes CAN NOT GET INSURANCE for preexisting condition !

UNLESS  they falsify their  paper work .........................sort of dishonest ?????

Diabetes should NOT be compared to HIV , maybe another STD would be a better

 comparison ?

I may suggest you find out more about diabetes !.

At this stage of the game MOST people on HIV MEDS are doing well .

Diabetes is a killer , and disabling desease    , because  of

serious blood flow problems , sink conditions are a night mare !!

often  legs are amputaed ! toes removed ,people end up blind !

it is an awful why to spend years slowely dieing !

I do pray the stigma of HIV subsides , but it will take something MORE  AWFUL
to make this happen , GOD BLESS US ALL !

                                                                be healthy , karl
