Stribild and ON Gold Standard Whey
« on: June 08, 2016, 10:33:27 am »
Hello guys!

I'm so excited that this is my very first topic in the forum!  :D

I've been working out for 8 months and haven't used any kind of supplements before. But I'm not sure if there's a huge problem with taking Stribild and Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey Protein at the same time.

I live in Turkey and here docs are SO prejudiced about supplements. I remember she told me that "of course you can workout but don't use supplements as we don't have any REAL idea about what they contain and it's hard to know if they can interact with your med".

I don't want to do something wrong and hide it from her though. Should I really worry about it? My kidney function is well by the way, according to my last 3 lab results.

Sorry about my poor English and take care of yourselves!

hello bro!

I am glad to hear from someone from my own country. Welcome to the forum. The truth is that you can find very helpful ideas on this forum because many experienced  LTS are here and thanks to all of them they answer to your questions in detail.

I have no idea about your question but now we are two from Turkey.

Hello and Welcome !
Your doctor is correct . Not only do you just end up with expensive pee but some can adversely interact with your meds.
I have been living with the virus for over 30+ years ,
like I said a big waste of money  ::)
Anyway, Welcome to the forums.

Best, Wade

thank you Wade. I just wanted to use Whey Protein to make sure I eat enough protein per day. As you might know you need to eat at least 110-120 gr protein per day and it sometimes could be tough to get them all from food.

At the recommendation of my doctor I drank protein shakes when I had wasting syndrome, when my body regained normal body weight, I stopped drinking them and ate a normal diet.

Whether you drink them or not is up to you, but your doctor tells you it's unnecessary. I'd listen to a medical professional before I'd take advice from strangers on the internet as confirmation bias. We're not here to contradict your medical team.

Being healthy and staying fit, there is nothing wrong with that. But if you're suddenly trying to supplement on account of an HIV+ diagnosis, it's largely a waste of time and money. Just exercise and do what you normally do.

If you do continue, keep in mind that a shake doesn't meet the food requirement for your meds. Needs to be solid food.

Welcome to the group.

my doc said that I need to limit my protein intake as my creatinine level seems to be going up a little (1.27 now, 1.26 six months ago). I've been taking about 110-120 grams of protein per day. she said 'it's too much protein and you've got to drink more water' (about 3 litres). I'll get tested for creatinine in a month to see if limiting protein intake and drinking water makes a difference.

aight, my last post i was trying to be diplomatic, i've been accused (often) of being harsh and abrasive about supplements

but this message is a wtf are you doing with your life reality check

you're taking way over twice the recommended daily intake of protein.
Quote
The DRI (Dietary Reference Intake) is 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight
... you don't weigh 150kg do you? (330 lbs for us americans)

just cut it out!! or at least cut it by half. eat a normal diet, exercise, and take your meds. but you don't need the supplements.

what more do you need to convince yourself at this point? twice now your doctor has advised against what you're doing. take the hint.

make HIV your priority, your health isn't some experiment for you test things out on.

i think your motivations are well intentioned but misguided.

ps... i'd like to offer a preemptive apology if i've hurt yours or anyone else's feelings, hugs and love all around  :-*

I just didn't think it's too much protein that I've been eating. More precisely I thought it's healthy if you're working out as you damage your muscles so you need to fix them with protein. On the other hand my creatinine results were high when I didn't exercise last year (it's been nearly 6 months I first went to gym). It's started to go up with  the treatment actually. But of course, if the doc says that eating too much protein is harmful for my kidney, I've got to cut it out. Let's see what'll happen 30 days later.

Look talk to your Doctor about working out a balanced diet or at ask her to help you get into contact with someone qualified who can work out and help you with a balanced diet basis/plan if that is what you want. If and that's a if you do need more protein I am sure they can help you get the correct amount without causing damage.  And yes, possibly causing your kidneys possible damage by taking supplements without correct medical advice is simply way too much.

Sounds to me like you have a very attentive and comprehensive doctor nathanieltroy.

Maybe come to terms with limits on your work out and desired body size, muscle mass, whatever you are going after.

Its sort of a miracle of science we can live so well with treated HIV these years.  Maybe count blessings and be as healthy as possible without trying to be something we are not, by genetics.

My doc in Geneva Switzerland who is a professor, researcher, and infectious disease  specialist - say NO NO NO to all supplements that he personally doesn't tell a particular patient to take.

Not that I 'work out' that much, although planning on changing that...

But I do know that when I do work out I get dreadful muscle fatigue/aches, like anyone I guess. Seems to be worse the older I get. Anyway, I bought some protein shakes some time ago from my local supermarket and found that if I drink these just after working out then the muscle aches are vastly diminished.

To be honest, I don't consider protein shakes as 'supplements' per se, so never mentioned them to my doctor. I viewed them in the same way that I would use a heavily caffeinated drink (coffee) to get going in the morning, or a Red Bull to stay alert. Perhaps thats a mistake.... I guess if any blood results show anything unusual then it may be a factor.

My doc did give me a list of things I couldn't take at the same time as my meds (such as multivits, indigestion remedies etc) and warned against things like St Johns Wort. Protein drinks, or food high in protein for that matter, wasn't mentioned. I'll try and remember to ask her next time.

My thoughts are it might depend also on what's in the shake, some seem to have crazy amounts of iron / vitamins added.

Jim

I don't care too much about vitamins, but I do about iron or other minerals. Don't have any in the house at the moment but they are on my shopping list so will check the ingredients out next time I'm shopping.

I returned to Hospital to give more bloods today for this exact matter. My last bloods(a week ago) gave a high kidney reading.I had explained to the Doc that i`d been supplementing with this exact Whey protein but he needed to check that it wasn`t Genvoya.I stopped taking whey a week ago.The results came today and kidneys are back to normal so it was the high protein. The question of dosage is pertinent here.A single serving is 25 grms of protein, the equivalent of a single chicken breast.I had been taking 2 servings post workout and same later on in the day.I reckon a daily intake including food of between 220 and 250 grms of protein per day. This is not unusual for those engaged in heavy resistance training.I weigh about 220lbs and 1 grm per pound of body weight is usually recommended just to maintain what you have,1.5 grms to gain.
I intend to reduce  to using just once per day post workout. The other crucial thing is to drink plenty of water to flush the kidneys out.
For the naysayers on this kind of supplementation - well, for some the gym is an important part of their lives - a great stress reliever, good for self esteem and great for maintaining bone density. It`s also a great replacement for those that like Beer or wine too much.. that`d be me.So it`s a reasonable trade off in my view.

Oh yes,an important postscript - the body can only really digest between 25 and 40 grms of protein at a single sitting. So as your Mother always told you,moderation,moderation..
