So much information....
« on: October 02, 2007, 10:00:27 pm »
I started taking a regular multivitamin as soon as I was diagnosed a month ago. Last night I read the Selenium, E, and B were good in bigger contents. So I was going to start adding them into my nightly routine. I finally called my doctor today to ask him, he should call me back shortly. My question is, can someone summarize all this information on this forum because to be honest, the more I read...including about HIV in my pets....the more I get confused. Does anyone have suggestions as to whats good bad and ugly to take? Advice would REALLY be appreciated! And my pets would appreciate it too.

Spoke with my doc....He said a regular multivitam like one-a-day would be fine. He also said adding selinium in has shown improvement in patients in the past. But Im not giving up there I now take the one a day, vit C, green tea extract, selinium, vit B complex, vit E complex........some in the morning, most at night before I crash. Milker that post helped me tremendously!

Love Ya!!

Sounds good to me, I'm glad it helped  8)

Don't overdose on Vit C, and E it's a common mistake. Check the amounts on each bottle.

Toxicity of Vitamin C and E is very low, but some people overdo it.

OK, after much consultation and talking with my ID, pharmacist and the cute kid at GNC, I am now taking the following load of stuff...

A One-a-day multivitamin

Vitamin E IU
Iron 18mg
Vitamin D 700IU
Fish Oil 1000mg
Selenium 200mg
Vitamin C 1000mg
Green Tea 315mg x2 a day
Flax Oil 1200 mg x2a day
Ginkgo Biloba 120mg
B-6 200mg
B-12 500mcg
Super B Complex
Echinacea Goldenseal 375mg

Some I take in the morning, some at night, some both. Some I take 2 pills (Green tea, Flax, Fish) so the green tea and flax are a total of 4 pills a day. Most are either antioxidents or work for the immune system in some way shape or form. The D helps absortion of the other stuff. The iron he said was good for the blood to absorb as well as for helping immune system.

Any suggestions or ideas?

Drop the Echinacea Goldenseal, it's to be avoided. I'm not sure about the Ginkgo Biloba, and check the vitamin B you may take too much. In any case be prepared to pee green due to the vitamin B and selenium. I think I've seen posts that said to avoid iron too. Do some searches on this website.

I have been told by an HIV nutritionist to avoid heavy amounts of vitamin E supplementation, along with avoiding the golden seal / echinacea supps that milker mentioned.  ALSO:  I have been told that dietary garlic is fine; however, garlic supplements (pills like "Garlique") are to be avoided.  For some reason, they react differently in the system.  I've also been told not to overdo it on the iron.  I believe the level you posted (18mg) is about the top cap for that one daily.

The main message I got from the nutritionist is that a one-a-day supplement is terrific, but an avalanche of such pills is anything from useless to potentially harmful.

Hope that helps.

But if its scary I dont want. I have checked the B, B isnt to bad since its water soluable I was told and if there is to much you just pee it out.

E I just have what the mutil vitamin has plus the one supplement. No others. Its well within the boundaries that Milker gave me. I questioned the Iron too, but got it for the effects he said. Maybe I will lay off it until I get into to do my labs again a week from Monday. Thanks guys.

I didn't say anything was wrong with the Gingko, I said I didn't know about it. If you're going to pee your vitamins, it's like peeing dollars, basically. Those supplements have a cost, if you're going to pee them then make a reasonable research on how much you want to stay in your body and how much you want to pee. Agreed with thunter, cooked garlic is fine, garlic pills is not.

Matt,

For the time being, the E is probably fine.  It makes a difference whether or not you are on meds or not.  Since you are not, it shouldn't be a problem.

Still, I caution you:  beware the cute kid at GNC.  He can have you carrying out supps by the truckload.  In all honesty, consider paring down the supplement list over time to just the 2 or 3 you (after consultation with your doctor) feel you get the most benefit from.  Funnel the money you save on those pills into good, wholesome foods and get the lion's share of your nutritional needs met that way.

Thanks for the input. I will take yall's advice. Will kinda skim down until I see my ID doc a week from Monday. Take in a list to him and see what he says. The Ginko is out. I checked the multivitamin doesnt have any Iron, so I think I may take it every couple days this week My goal is try and see if this helped my CD4 count over the next 2 months while they are doing my levels. It probably wont but never hurts to try.

It comes up every once in a while, but the best boost for your immune system is LOVE. In the 17 years since I was tested the year with the highest TCell count was the year that Kurt and I met and fell in Love.
Isnt that sweet? But its true .
You can put all those pills in your mouth but if you are unhappy and stressed out, they wont do that much good.

Sweet :)

But I gave up on love a long time ago. 13 years ago and have had no luck sense, so its not even an option for me. So its the pills I take to try and make me feel better. I do have to say that I had much more energy today. I dont know if it was just me or if the Vit B stuff actually worked. But i went out tilled up the patch of dirt where we had some work done in the yard. Put compost in it and mixed it, then put on top soil and grass seed. Then watered. And this isnt a small patch. About 20 ft across in diameter :) Then watched SC play the ugliest game theyve one this afternoon, and then walked my pup a while on the golf course.

Usually I would never do all that! So maybe something is working:)
