Probably nothing.....nothing more than you've already experienced. The effects don't usually morph into different reactions each night. You'll get dizzy, then you'll get better as you become accustomed to it. If I remember correctly, I think the incidentals after I took the pill went on for a couple weeks and slowly dissipated to nothing. The dreams....they came and went with (for me) with more in the beginning and towards the end of my regimen 7 years later I had 'dreams'.....just dreams like I always did before. No more or less weird than when I was not on meds. I found that taking it when I went to bed was best. I didn't stay awake imagining reactions or overthinking how I was feeling at any minute. I was asleep - I didn't care.

It got to the point with Atripla that I just took it before bed...no food or water. Just downed it. That's ME and you may function better with food. You'll know soon enough how your stomach fares with or without food. My partner HAS to take his with soda. I don't think it necessarily makes him feel better...I just think he's addicted to RC cola. For both of us, though, after a very short while there wasn't any noticeable effects other than a few sporadic ridiculous dreams.

The main thing...in my opinion....is to get into a routine! Try to take it the same time each night. Don't worry about setting alarms and making sure it's the exact same time each night. You'll drive yourself crazy! Just think of it more like brushing your teeth, feeding the cat, whatever so that it's second nature and you always remember to take it.

By the way....welcome!!! You'll find some great people on the forums and more information that you think you'll be able to absorb!! You'll also get a much needed laugh from time to time!!

Hi Madison,

Just more along with what Dan is saying.  The first night I took Atripla it was a very hardcore dizzyness and it freaked me out a little.  The next night it was less.  By the third or fourth night I could stay up a while, and sometimes even eat before taking it. It still makes me warm and a little drowsy, but I've even gone out after taking it.  Your body will adjust.  You most likely won't but if you DO have any major reactions then of course talk to your doctor.  But if you're like me and others I've heard from you'll get used to it as part of your night time. :)

I too had severe reactions with Atripla.  My first couple of nights felt like an acid trip.  And yes, the severity did eventually subside a bit but ultimately I had to change regimens as I just couldn't tolerate it. That being said, I seem to be "Mr. Side Effect" so if there is a side effect to be had, my body responds.  I do have friends that have tolerated Atripla, I unfortunately was not one of them. Good luck!

Ted, you should makes sure it's been at least two hours since you last ate when you take your Atripla (and don't eat for two hours after you take it). Also, try to avoid a last meal that is high in fat. Having undigested food, particularly fatty food, in your stomach when you take Atripla will make the side-effects more noticeable for most people.

These initial side-effects should lessen after a few days/weeks, so give it time. If they don't improve within a month (after taking care with the food issue) it would be time to think about a switch. Good luck.

If you want to clarify -
You got diagnosed 2 weeks ago.
Are you in "seroconversion" now, meaning infected in last few weeks?
Or you got diagnosed 2 weeks ago but don't know when you were infected?

Welcome to the forum.
Diagnosis is a shock, add to that going on HAART and adjusting.  It will all take time.

Yes, I tested positive a month ago and western blot confirm 2 weeks ago...I have no idea when I was infected....I am in Mexico...Thank God they provide full medical and meds for free here for anyone positive...no questions....It started with Uvietis in my eyes...which lead to a syphilis diagnosis, although I NEVER had ANY outward signs of that, followed with HIV +..I was and am horrified....terrible feelings of shame, guilt disgust etc......what a couple of shitty weeks....But chin up, I will listen to all you guys, take the meds the right way, and follow everything I can do to help beat this down...

Glad to hear its going better. Ann is correct in suggesting to take the meds on an empty stomach, meaning at least 2 hours after eating or at least an hour before.   Just like some other medicines, Atripla is more readily absorbed with food, meaning that you will have a higher than normal dosage in the blood if ou take it with food, especially fatty food.  It's the higher level in your blood that can make the side effects more pronounced.

As you have already started to see, most adjust to he meds. For myself, I no longer matters when I take them or when I eat as far as side effects- I just don't have them.  Even so, I still try to stick to taking them just before bed and on an empty stomach as I prefer to keep the owing normal.

Ask your doctor about taking acyclovir. You can either take it when you feel an outbreak coming on, or you can take it daily to stop outbreaks from happening at all.

It's available as a generic, so it doesn't have to be expensive. You might need to ask your doctor to specify generic on the prescription.

I've been taking prophylactic (ie daily) generic acyclovir for years and I wouldn't be without it.

You can read more about herpes (cold sores = herpes) and its treatment by clicking here.

You might also find some of the other Lessons available on this website helpful, so check them out.

Thanks for the feedback...Day 9...The cold sore areas never really got bad at all and seem to be healing..Never erupted...Side effects minimal...Sometimes a bit shaky, but that is more because I forget, or wait to long, to eat...Nights have been fine, lots of vivid dreams but nothing abnormal...I imagine some of the "side effects"are the stress and anxiety of going from ok to treatment in 20 days...Merry Christmas to you all!!

Mostly back to a normal schedule...Have a light case of thrush form the prednisone, which I am finished taking and took one dose of Fluconazole, 750mg yesterday so that should be clear soon and I can really get on the road to progress....If you are new in here, hit me up as it would be nice to have some fellow newbies to share our experiences now and as we move along....Thanks for all the early support, especially DANO..xo
