Isn't that weird. I just started taking Vit.D3 after reading an article on it.
The next week was my bloods and Whoa, I had low Vit.d.
D3 was the one I needed. I have 5000 IU per day.
I also started taking L-Tyrosine as well, an amino acid, and they seem to be working fine.
Stops the negative thoughts, and helps me with the fatigue, I have a farm, and fatigue I don't need.

Hi all..
Hope you all had a great 4th!  Back in March, I posted my labs and that I was Vit D difficient. my level was 10ng's.  My doc prescribed 50,000 i.u.'s twice per week, and I also started taking 2,000 i.u.'s a day for maintenance.  My latest labs as of 6/28 are:

D - 63ng's
T-Cells - 1,035
CD4 - 34%
haart regimen: Kaletra, Trizivir, Viread
Lipitor and Tricor for Triglycerides (still too high)

Now I have to find out if I should keep taking the megadose of D, or just the smaller dose for maintenance, or stop altogether till winter.. I'll keep you posted.

I was told in May my vitamin D levels were low, I was prescribed the same dose as J.R.E.

50,000 once a week for 3 months. I just got a call from their office saying I need to continue for another 3 months. I will ask him what the deal is. I didn't think too much of it until I just found this thread!

I'll keep you posted. I have an apt in two weeks. Anything I should ask him?

That's 16,000 IU/per day, quite a bit.

That's already quite a good level, I don't think you want to keep taking 16000 IU. Maybe 2000 for summertime and a little more in winter.

Jeffrey,

The difference is I was only taking 50,000 iu once a week for only one month( to start).  After that , It was one 50,000 iu capsule per month. My levels are back to where they should be.

Let us know how your results are when you get blood test again.

I suppose the best way to get Vitamin D is by skin synthesis from sunlight. I get herpes simplex outbreaks from UV exposure. I know how this sounds but I hae found it to be very true for my case. For example I rarely go out into the sun and after reading about Vitamin D deficiencies I thought I would grab some rays. I started purpously staying in the sun for 4 days 10-15 minutes a day and on the 5th day Bahm! big cold sore on my lower lip. Has anyone had this experience. Is there any benefit to getting Vitamin D naturally from sunlight versus taking a suppliament? What about HIV, I thought I read somewhere that UV can also stimulate virus growth, has anyone else heard of this as well?

Depending on where you live, your complexion, and on the season, it can be difficult to get an adequate dose of vitamin D from the sun. In the winter in northern latitudes, it is impossible, so you should supplement.

One thing you can try is to get exposure from 10-20 mins without sunblock, and then put sunblock afterwards. You may not get as many skin problems. But of course your body will produce less vitamin D from the sun.

Obviously it's cheaper to get vitamin D from the sun than from a supplement, that's a benefit. If everybody supplemented, we would run out of fish and supplement prices would go way up.

One of my red haired sisters is allergic to sunshine and will get ugly fever blisters.
With protection for her face, she can get sunshine on her body without any problems.
Just a thought to make some vitamin D naturally.

Rather than start a new topic, I thought I'd resurrect this one.

I just wanted to get the experience of folk who've been taking high dose vitamin D for a while. I've been taking between 4,800 and 5,000 I.U. a day for 15 months and in that time I've had no infections of any kind. Maybe this is to do with my meds, but I usually got a cold, flu or chest/ear infection at least once a year when I was immunocompetent. I started taking vitamin D after a blood test showed my blood level was 29 nmol/l. I'll be getting my levels retested next time I see my doctor in April.

Also, my long bones are no longer sensitive to pressure or stresses. :-)

Edit: So I don't misrepresent myself, I should point out that I had a brief episode of oral thrush close to the time I started taking vitamin D, but this resolved itself without issue.
