Title: We've gone over the fiscal cliff early

Kate Middleton is preggars... like totally (http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/blog/2012/dec/03/duke-duchess-cambridge-expecting-baby)

This is what happens when you don't listen to Coach Carr

Guess I'll have to stop watching The Today Show.  They, as well as GMA, do almost daily royal stories.  I'm sure they'll move them into the first half hour, which is usually reserved for hard news.  They've obviously done research that viewers eat that up.

Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is a severe form of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy that is different from the more common nausea and vomiting known as morning sickness. Dehydration, malnutrition, and other serious complications are the result of the "unrelenting, excessive pregnancy-related nausea and/or vomiting that prevents adequate intake of food and fluids."[1] Hyperemesis is considered a rare complication of pregnancy but, because nausea and vomiting during pregnancy exist on a continuum, there is often not a good diagnosis between common morning sickness and hyperemesis. Estimates of the percentage of pregnant women afflicted range from 0.3% to 2.0%.[2]

God that sounds ominous - I hope she gets smoother sailing soon.

ABC World News led with this story.  I think that is absurd!

They had experts saying women who have HG are more likely to have a girl or twins.  Then, they went into the need for a c-section, and then obviously one will be delivered first.  So, that child will be the next in line, bumping Harry.  And, of course, they had to discuss how Kate drank water recently for a toast, instead of wine like everyone else.

I wouldn't be surprised if this health issue is all made up.  I mean, they need a compelling story, so they look like everything isn't perfect and they have the same issues as everyone else.  ;)

Seriously, I was kinda disappointed William wasn't staying by his wife's bedside and sleeping there.  It isn't like he has to punch a clock to support his family.  Perhaps she didn't want him there.  See, I've already been sucked into this story, when I loathe the coverage.  I suppose it is like people who say they hate negative campaign ads, but use them to make voting decisions.

Good Lord, Theodora. The future King is not going to stay overnight in some bed bug infested NHS shit hole. Ms. Middleton is a commoner and used to roughing it. I just hope those kindly nurses are pumping her body with some extra feeding tube protein so she doesn't walk out looking like Bride of Skeletor.

As there a bedbug problem in England, too?
I thought the laugh-at-the-rich fun of the last wave in the US was that "high class" coops, condos and 5-star hotels were infested.  Big old creaky palace is probably a great place for ancient aristocratic lines of vermin to reign forever.

It was a joke meech.

When this story first broke I actually went to the trouble of looking up the King Edward VII Hospital and it said on wikipedia that it was private. Now, of course this being the UK where they don't know how to speak proper English and call french fries "chips", private schools "public schools" and really, really fuck up the pronunciation of "aluminium" maybe, just maybe, a private hospital actually what a Socialist Workers Party NHS hospital is called.

Nurse Jacintha Saldanha, who was working on reception when Australian DJs made prank call, dies in suspected suicide (http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2012/dec/07/duchess-cambridge-hoax-call-nurse-found-dead)

Poor, poor woman- she didn't do anything wrong (I don't think it was even her who said anything about the patients condition, she just put the call through) No one got hurt.

My thoughts are with her family.

She was obviously already troubled.  It is awful, but I don't think the DJs are to blame.  It was a harmless prank call.  If it gets to where they can't do prank calls, then I guess everything is off limits.  Did she grow up in a Japanese family?

That link is only measuring by post-secondary education so it's not a very accurate measurement of overall education comparisons. You'd have to use several more markers (less than high school, high school only diploma, etc.) for a useful comparison then aggregate them. Plus it's very difficult to compare what a high school graduate in the US knows upon receiving their diploma with what someone knows once they pass the standard baccaulaureat in France, etc.

As someone with a post-secondary education you should know this.

Are you serious?  I'm not saying her suicide is funny.  I am saying it was a harmless (or should have been) prank call.  If someone made a prank call telling someone a family member died, then I would say that was outrageous and vile.  If that person committed suicide after being told his wife died, then I would say we could blame the people making the prank call.  Calling pretending to be the Queen doesn't rise to that level.  I am saying these DJs shouldn't be blamed for her suicide.

If making a prank call pretending to be the queen is off limits, then everything is off limits.  The nurse had to already be very troubled.  From what I understand, she isn't even the nurse who gave info about Kate.  She was the nurse who transferred the call to the nurse.

My thoughts are with her family.

My thoughts exactly. So sad and shocking. She put the call through, when she shouldn't have, or wouldn't have if she knew better. A tiny error in judgment anyone could have made.

really fuck up the pronunciation of "aluminium"

Given that Potassium is pronounced as "pota-see-um", Magnesium as "magnee- see-um", and so on and so forth, logically "Aluminium" should also be pronounced likewise.    :)

Like a cab driver in Manhattan?

There is no one Indian accent. Fluency in English varies with economic status as well as with different regions of India depending on whether one comes from a large city or a small town or village somewhere. The majority of educated Indians from big cities would speak English fluently but tend to freely mix in their own Indian regional language when speaking to each other, although most are well-capable of conversing free of colloquialisms. Since India is home to several regional languages English also functions as a "link language" between people from diverse parts who would otherwise have no local language in common.

An Indian who goes to NYC to become a cab driver would likely belong to a vastly different socio-economic background as compared with a dentist trainee in the US of Indian origin, and they'd speak entirely different brands of English; perhaps some of these cab drivers only learn English after arriving in the US.

I suspect I've given an overly long response to a facetious question but anyhow, here it is.  :)

Incidentally (according to wiki), India also has the largest number of English speakers after the US (and rising), most of whom speak it as a second or third language though. And quite badly, if I may say so myself.

The status of English in India is very complex, it's not by any stretch a foreign language but it's not quite native either, even though it is for a certain segment of people. The accents range from a refined sort resembling British RP to one possessing a distinctly vernacular flavour and which sounds very little like English to a native English speaker.

I basically realize all of that darling, but then explain if you will why I had to drop a classed in mathematics as a freshman at Penn State because the Indian professor's accent was indescifrable. And I wasn't alone -- probably half of us dropped out of the class by the early cut-off date. Isolated example I admit, but I can't imagine she was from a lower caste. But you're right -- the paltry 1% of immigrants from India are vaishyas (traders caste) while I'm sure someone in higher education is from something else. Still, nobody can understand them :)

From what I've read the industry nationally that Indians dominate in is motel ownership. Like to the tune of 70%, and this is mostly from Indians who migrated in the 80's and 90's.

And while we're at did you know that most porn shops in NYC are run by Sri Lankans? I know I'm cheating for blaming India for this, but it's still fascinating :)

William was such a handsome young man. Maybe he'll rally for a good looking and bald 30's.  He looks happy in so many pictures these years.  I'm glad he married Kate - he seemed to want it for a long time, wasn't it her who played a bit hard to get?  Also it would seem to be a love match and they really got close before they finally made it to the alter.

James Middleton was looking foxy this week.

I hate for people from other country's to think I cant understand them simply for the accent so I hide my embarrassment with humor and tell them I don't hear well and they are going to have to yell at me like Americans do to them when they think they cant speak English .

I just got off the phone with Jeff and have to say that at no time did I need subtitles..... of course, I attribute my ability to understand him to watching a weekend long marathon of Honey Boo Boo....  but, nevertheless, subtitles were not needed and I reckon that I won't need them.... I have always loveded Jeff's accent very much.

True , before then I only spoke banjo

If it makes you feel better, Tim Hunter is even harder to decipher when speaking.

I hate to have to agree with Missp on anything, but this is true ^

If I were you I wouldn't make fun of Jeff's accent.  I'm sure you don't sound like a civilized person.

I'm sure it's a charming accent, Jeff.  Don't mind these hater hoes.

Girl, only dogs can hear your high-pitched squeal.

Scares me too Jeff as you're one I always understand the first time and don't need you to repeat.  Maybe it's cause we don't speak with "airs"?   :o

2) did you hear about the replacement for Jersey Shore that is being filmed in West Virginia? It's called Buck Wild:

I think I'll enjoy that show.  Most of the things performed were things we did growing up.  We made our own fun and most of us survived.   ;D

Rolling down the hill in a tire brought back memories. We didn't wear a helmet, which probably explains a lot. :o

We "made my own fun" growing up too but it consisted of playing croquet and Triple Yahtzee, not whatever it was those fine folks were doing in that video.

Oh we loved croquet too, specifically the mallets. You know what they say, when you have a hammer everything looks like a nail!

UM...made fun can't be purchased.  Creating a slip n slide in the mud on the back hill that puts you in the Ohio River...priceless.  Fighting to get back to shore and only having to walk a mile to do again, even better.

Still has to be purchased, I'd find my own fun amongst the cute skinny southern boys...the dumber the better.

Jeff, I can understand you.  Of course this could be because I've lived in Alabama and got used to the accent.

At work, one of the clients is from Mississippi.  Hardly anyone can understand him, so I'm the translator.

I've always found it interesting that British and Irish singers sound so much like Americans, but when they speak, you can barely understand many of them.  Even the ones you can understand, the thick accent is there.  They sing in a U.S. dialect to appeal to Americans?

That’s largely because everyone loses a major chunk of their real accent when singing. Every accent has a unique inflection, rhythm and tonal quality. And this goes awry in adjusting to the tune or music of the song.

Try singing along to Adele or Coldplay and you’d sound pretty much like them. In everyday speech most North Americans, unlike most English (there are exceptions though), have rhotic accents- i.e. you distinctly pronounce the “r” sound in words ending with “r” such as “car, far, star, lover etc”, whereas most English would say “ca-ah, fa-ah, lov-eh”, and would not usually pronounce the “r” where it falls at the end of the word and is preceded by a vowel. When singing this major difference between the accents is not noticeable as many Americans singers would be forced to pronounce the “r” as the English pronounce it (or rather don’t pronounce it) or vice versa, depending on the music piece. The difference between accents is much more apparent in rap.
