India to ban HIV discrimination: HIV and AIDS (Prevention and Control) Bill

India has passed a landmark bill which aims to ensure equal rights for those living with HIV/AIDS.

The HIV and AIDS (Prevention and Control) Bill, passed by the country's parliament on Tuesday, will make it illegal to discriminate against people living with and affected by HIV.

It is the first of its kind in south Asia, and will make India the largest country in the world to ban this kind of discrimination.

The legislation will make it illegal to discriminate against those living with HIV in the workplace; deny them access to education, housing and health care, or the right to stand for or hold public or private office. The legislation also bans businesses and other public places from refusing entry to anyone with HIV/AIDS.

There are also provisions where a person with HIV is not required to undergo an HIV test, medical treatment or research without their consent. An individual will also have the right to not disclose their status unless they choose to or if required by a court order.

There were more than 2.1 million people living with HIV in India in 2015, according to UNAIDS, the United Nations program which monitors global action on HIV/AIDS

Given the growth of reactionary forces round the world in very recent years,this is  something of a relief to see.That it is such a hard fight to win what should be normal practice in civilised countries,is a measure of how vigilant we should all be and never to take things for granted.
It`s a cliche but i really am grateful every morning i get up and feel well.I spend my free time online,railing against those forces that are determined to strip you of your intrinsic value and monetise just about everything.The surprise to me in the last few years has been the number of really retrograde voices out there and their even uglier ideologies.So i go to their online home turf and pic rows,which sometimes last weeks with pages of footnotes and references.Don`t be confused about the opposition - they have their quotas of idiots that can fairly be dismissed but rest assured they have their master thinkers who are capable of rigorous argument and are highly organised.
So toughen up if you haven`t already and take the fight to them.

Today this act came into effect.

It means 2 million people living with HIV in India have been afforded what many of us in the first world nations would consider basic protection & rights.

Its a huge step forward for India, its a massive leap in ensuring people living with HIV globally have protected rights against discrimination
