screw colin powell
« on: October 19, 2008, 08:21:33 pm »
If I wasn't such a big supporter of Barrack Obama this endorsement would certainly make me re-think my support of him.

Colin Powell is one of the most overrated people in American politics.

He was wrong about the first Gulf War (he was against it)

He was wrong about the second Gulf War (he was for it)

He is vehemently against gays in the military.

Even though his entire career is due to Truman's forced integration of the military, he doesn't feel that gays, who put their lives on the line for this country, deserve that same opportunity.   What a cowardly, narrowminded,  politically expediant position to take.

And didn't he use his great vaunted (undeserved) reputation to mislead America about the evidence leading up to war in Iraq?!

If Barrack Obama is as smart as i think he is,  he won't let Powell anywhere near an Obama White House.

I will be voting for Barack Obama on Election Day...Colin Powell's support of him has nothing to do with my decision to vote for him.  In fact if Clarence Thomas comes out in support I might just stay home!  ;)

I've already heard from one friend who stated that Powell's endorsement is making his father consider voting for Obama.  I guess bmancanfly would prefer that this man go ahead and vote for McCain?

Did you go to logic class with Sarah Palin, and Rep. Bachman?

How could how you could draw that conclusion from my post?

If the poorly informed need the seal of approval from the discredited Colin Powell as a reason to vote for Obama then great.   The more votes for Obama the better   -  I hope that he wins in a landslide.

The point of my post is that Powell, in my opinion, has no credibility left ( if he ever really had/deserved any in the first place).

It completely eludes me why this man (Powell) is held in such high esteem.

I trust that you didn't take my post as an indication that I hold Powell in high esteem, because if so you'll be the one joining that logic class with Sarah Palin, and Rep. Bachman.

But by all means continue your public rant.

Ah, politics does produce strange bedfellows. The author that you site in your article, Christopher Hitchens, has also endorsed Obama in Slate Magazine. I'll hold my breath with you while we wait for Hitchen's retraction following Powell's endorsement.

If Hitch can get over it, so will you.

It seems that people are trying to put words in my mouth.  I am a major supporter of Obama.  I have walked door to door through neighborhoods that most people won't even drive through, fast, to register over 400 new Democrats here in FL to help Obama win.  I would never vote for McCain/Palin.  I don't understand how it can be perceived from my OP that;
I guess bmancanfly would prefer that this man go ahead and vote for McCain?
I can't follow that logic, sorry.
My post was entirely about Colin Powell and his questionable integrity, and undeserved reputation.  Philly you still haven't explained how you made that leap from any of my posts.

And saying;
I trust that you didn't take my post as an indication that I hold Powell in high esteem, because if so you'll be the one joining that logic class with Sarah Palin, and Rep. Bachman.
I don't see the error in my logic since you gave no indication of your thoughts about Powell - which is what this thread is about.

Sorry my feeble attempt a humor missed the mark and offended you.  That was not my intention.

If Hitch can get over it, so will you.
Hitch hasn't changed his opinion of Powell and neither will I.  There's nothing for either of us to "get over".

If Powell feels that it is safe (now that the outcome is almost certainly predetermined) to pick sides I'll have to hold my nose and stop "ranting".  But, thanks in large measure to Powell, over 4000 American families will will be celebrating the holidays this year without a loved one - killed in Iraq. Sorry if it sounds like a rant but that offends me.  And I find it difficult to let him off the hook that easy.

To summarize;
Powell = bad, very bad
Obama = good, very good.

VOTE FOR OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Before you align yourself with Christopher Hitchens, I hope you realize that he was an unapologetic war hawk when it came to Iraq. A major supporter of Bush and his Iraq policy in the run up to the war and after.

Like I said politics produce strange bedfellows.

You're right.  It certainly does.    (Look how McCain cozied up to the far, far right)

Nevertheless, Hitch is spot on with Powell.
You should see what he said about Mother Teresa.  Holy crap! ;D

He's an extremely bright guy who I only occasionally agree with.  But Hitch's shortcomings notwithstanding he lays out a pretty good case against Powell.  And that was written before the Iraq debacle.

I guess any Republican endorsement of Obama is a good thing.  But Powell makes my skin crawl.

I'm certain no big fan of Colin Powell by any stretch of the imagination (in fact, that appalling demonstration at the UN about Iraq was one of my major reasons for participating in the peace marches prior to the war beginning), but he is well respected among many moderates and those who lean to the right and I am very pleased he has spoken up.

Particularly, I was happy that in the seven minutes of uninterrupted airtime he was given, he laid out a very cogent case as to his reasons he was supporting Obama and did a very good job of laying into the McCain/Palin camp for some of the vitriol that has been the highlight of their campaign in the final few weeks (Ayers, the Muslim smear, etc).

I am willing to give him some credit for that even if I may never entirely forgive him for his role in our invasion of Iraq.
