Fish Kisses
« on: July 12, 2007, 08:21:34 pm »
Today I went swimming in the Mississippi River.

I drifted in the water, head and shoulders anchored to the shore.  As I looked to the sky above me, I saw nothing but light clouds - that somehow seemed to drift across the sky with the same freedom and release that overcame my body.

My stillness invited the fish, taken timid of motion, to investigate the freckles and moles on my body for edibility.  The peck of their lips deliberate on my flesh, followed by immediate eddies of slime and current tickled my body in a way that I had not remembered from my youth.

The sand rubbed my back, as the waves invoked by the speedboats traveled the length of my body.  My ears were submerged, drowning the screaming children further up the beach.  I could hear nothing but a distant humming of boat motors and a stillness that I am still convinced was the sound of the earth turning on its axis.

I smile.

well, I guess fish do have lips.  Now I know.

Even better,  you're home.  You don't know how happy I am to see your little fingers typing away on the keyboard.

and you know, your very first sentence immediately took me back 50 years.  I don't remember how hold I was when I first read Tom Sawyer but the image of floating down that magical river has never left me.   That's when I  first knew the world was worth exploring.   Thanks for the feel-good feeling of nostalgia.

That's a great poem.  It's honesty drew me in.

Thanks,

I experience it as a poem- an eloquent, expressive means of capturing experience.  It has form and a title.  However, I respect that you define your post in whatever capacity you see appropriate.  Therefore, I am sorry as well.

Thank you for the compliment...  I apologize for not acknowledging your gratitude, regardless. :)
