Oh my god it does seem like a curse.  What would be the purpose, who would cast such a curse, putting these people through hell for what diabolical ends?

Rosanne herself?
Laurie Metcalf?
Sandra Bernhard?
If it was Sandra Bernhard and you don't know her name you must now go wear a shame hat in the corner for not knowing your middling Gay Icons....

Hmm.  Heteros on a gay cruise.  Might go something like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbY5J4HBPG8

yes it was Sandra Bernhard,  this first cruise I took was a while back, probably year 97 or so.  She was supposed to do two shows, one for the first seating and one for the second seating.  She got so much slack and booed by the first seating folks she cancelled the second standup and locked herself in her room until the next day she got off in mexico and flew back to Los Angeles.

She can be funny at times, but to me very obnoxious just like Kathy Griffin.

I hear people like Bill Maher and Kathy Griffin say they occasionally get booed, or have people walk out.  I always wonder who these people are.  They got free tickets, and had no idea what kind of material they do?

I have no problem with the content, i like a dirty talking chicks or dudes as well, but Kathy starts talking and never shuts up, she tries to be funny by talking over folks and just goes on ad on and on.  she is always 'on' you never hear a serious thing come out of her mouth.  By the way, i have a friend that i tell this to all the time because he loves Kathy Griffin, boy he gets angry as hell.  I just love to get him all charged up.  lol

Now Lisa Lapanelli she is funny, dirty, and a great standup comedianne. and of course chris rock and eddie murphy are great

eddie murphy are great

Did you ever hear Eddie Murphy's act in the early days of AIDS?  I believe it was the "Delerious" act, but I could be wrong.  It got taken out of some bookstores and record shops because of his insensitivity and bad information.  I remember it vaguely because it's been so long since I've seen it, but he talks about girls who hang on with gay men, and stated something like "then they have AIDS on their lips."

All successful comedians have their good bits. No one can appeal to everyone.  Eddie Murphy was a fag-bashing tool early in his career, in his stand up, but other things he did were a riot.

I bought Sandra's last CD on iTunes a few weeks ago. I hadn't heard stand up from her in so long.... It had some good bits, probably only people who followed from the 80s would laugh. (She's old!) I liked Kathy instantly because so much of it was celebrity based and she was an interesting step from Sandra, in fact.

I saw Kathy on some major talk show about 6 months ago and the camera did some unflattering angles, while she was going on and on, as you all said above... She was so wired, and she did this monstrous thing with her mouth and her eyes to the host. The camera caught it, and with all her make up and schtick, she looked just like Wayland Flowers' Madame (who is usually brought up in reference to Joan Rivers).

When celebrities turn into this sort of character/caricature, the French have a good reference: Grand Guignol.  It is pretty entertaining, but its a very "hard" art, so not everyone's cup of tea.

Sandra was on the Hot in Cleveland episode that takes place on a lesbian cruise. That show is funny, and Betty White, bless her heart, always funny, never desperately clawing, and thus never turned into Grand Guignol.

yeah i know Eddie was quite the fag basher and AIDS basher back in the 80''s, but i think a lot of folks were that way back in those days, not that that makes it right, but he was still funny to a little young guy like me at the time, his standup anyways. hopefully he has changed his outlook and thinking about that, but of course you never hear much about him these days unless it includes a prostitute, transsexual one at that matter.

In the 80's when suddenly gays were everywhere and hip -- some comedians played into feeding the "gay panic"  of their macho audience members by being fag-bashing.

Murphy is pansexual if you trust what you read in the blogosphere, and yet seemed to have been cynical -- before the big prostitute scandal -- and was ok to be a bit hypocritical.  I thought some of his mincing gay schtick was funny, anyway, it wasn't always offensive.  I don't think he personally was a fag basher but rather just had bad taste in his material, pandering...

He went on to do hilarious, broad-appeal transformational comedy. His cross-dressing - meh..

Here's a list of best and worst cross-dressing performances:

The author lists Norbit as one of the worst, but I thought Rasputia was funny enough!  ::)

I posted this before, but I was very suprised a while ago about Yul Brynner's sultry turn at cross-dressing although the voice was apparently dubbed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QitQrNRw6rE

Regarding standup, I've delved into standup comedy on the side mostly as a writer. I like the observational comedy with nuanced thinking-out-of-the-box deconstructive funny bits (never mean or nasty) that look at the ordinary and extraordinary.  A lot also rides, as noted earlier, on the comedian's deft delivery (e.g., timing, pacing/cadence, vocal clarity, audience connection, believability).

I thought he meant Shelly Winters LOL!

I have done cruise ships twice and was sick as shit because I get slow motion sickness, but I was not on board for more than 24 hours so I have yet to find out if I'd get over it.

My dad texted me yesterday that they are in FLL and today on the ship, "NOT Carnival." They like to drink wine and sleep out on the balcony.  I should give it a go.

See, this proves funny is in the eye of the beholder.  Lisa makes me uncomfortable, with her race and gay jokes.  I know comedians are suppose to push the envelope and even make people uncomfortable at times.  Yes, I also know we have to laugh at ourselves and the stereotypes, because stereotypes are often based in truth, or some truth.  I do find her funny at times, but I usually have to FF to the next.

I will give you that Kathy can be irritating.  Her character on Seinfeld was really her.  The scene, where Kramer has to break his vow of silence to tell her to shut up, seems about right.

Now see, that's what I meant I won't do -- EVER. Driving across an entire continent just seems really stupid.

Ah, I used to love it when I lived in Seattle. The biggest ball of twine in this or that little town, oysters for sale on the side of the road in...Nevada (yes), the officer in Nebraska who pulled me over for speeding only to, wait which forum is this? No, I can't continue with that story.

I would love to do that one more time, though that sounds a little "Boys on the Side" doesn't it? The West Coast is calling.

I found her funny the first time, but like Margaret Cho, the act never seems to change. I can only see MC make fun of her mom so many times, and the same goes for Lisa Lampanelli's love for black men.

I don't have cable (is that stilla thing) so I feel like my entire pop culture world is frozen somewhere in 2000-2006. Maybe that's what it means to get old in the post-whatever-this-is world. You stop taking in new media.
