Side effects of Prevnar-13
« on: December 16, 2016, 04:26:50 pm »
Odd question here, which I wasn't going to ask but then figured someone may have some similar experience.

At my clinic visit this week, I had the Prevnar-13 pneumonia vaccine. Around 4 months ago I had the Pneumovax vaccine, which means I've had the set now.

Only thing with this one, which didn't give me anything other than a slightly sore arm for a few hours, is that 24hrs later, I had excruciating achilles pain in one leg which caused me to limp the whole day. Then for the next two days (including today) the achilles is fine, but my calf is hurting which is continuing the limping action.

Of course, I could have pulled a muscle in my calf when limping around for a day due to the achilles tendon pain, but it does all seem a bit co-incidental that it was shortly after the Prevnar vaccination being administered. Has anyone else had odd muscular or joint issues following one of these things?

Reason I suspect it's the Prevnar, is that I had a nasty side effect when taking some Doxycycline antibiotics earlier this year which manifested as achilles pain - so I kinda associate it now with 'medication' or 'treatment'. I may be completely wrong however!

Soreness in the arm, sounds pretty typical to me.

The leg thing, could be just muscle pain, and/or coincidence. Coincidences do happen and people link it to stuff with no connection all the time, but as long as it was just a day or so of discomfort and the foot did not fall off i would call it mild and worth it.  ;)

Anyhow no-one here could tell you if it was the case or not, if it still bothers you ask the GP next time you see them. It does not a few common side effects that could be related.

in adults, the most common side effects were pain, redness, and swelling at the injection site, limitation of arm movement, fatigue, headache, muscle pain, joint pain, decreased appetite, vomiting, fever, chills, and rash

Thanks, so muscle and joint pain are included in common side effects. That makes sense.

I know it could be coincidence, but the achilles pain came on in a really weird way, when I was sitting fairly normally in a meeting, without any odd physical exertion beforehand - which is why it stood out.

I wasn't expecting anyone to tell me what it was, just wondered if anyone had any issues of a similar ilk after vaccination, and I only asked it here because presumably most of us will have had the vaccine at some point :)

And....foot is still on (last time I checked anyway!)

It's a single shot (for both Pneumovax-23 and Prevnar-13) although there needs to be a 3 month gap between receiving each shot.

:) You know i just had to point out the mild reaction is common and better than the illness it prevents right.
Glad to hear both feet are still attached

I *think* that in the UK, Prevnar-13 has only been fairly recently approved for adults living with HIV. If not approved at a UK level, then certainly a local level for me. I think thats the reason I had them in that order.

I don't honestly think it makes any real difference which order you have them though.
