Drug Failure

I started Atripla in early June and am waiting for my first test results since starts meds (yep, I'm a virgin).  Is it possible that I'll find out it isn't working even though earlier tests didn't show any resistance?  Part of the question has to do with how I'm feeling...My CD4's were pretty low when I finally started meds (280 or so) and VL was <100K.  I believe I was infected in 1996.   Do others who have been on meds for a while actually notice that they "feel" better - more energy, cuts heal quicker, etc.. ?

Hey Berlin!

You might want to read our lesson on treatment resistance for specific information. There are a couple of ways of testing for resistance and it might be an idea to ask your doctor which one s/he ordered.

Hi Berlin.

I take the same medication as you (although not in the combined pill form) and that combo has worked wonders for me, I'm still getting great numbers 2 and a half years after starting.

As matty has already said, take some time to read the lessons, you will find a lot of answers in there.

Most importantly, try not to stress yourself out about this (easier said than done I know), Im sure you will be fine on that combo!

my numbers was like yours and i was infected in 1986.  anyway the meds are working an my cd4 is around 400 and vl is 50.

I could not agree more.  One month ago I felt that same burst of energy, everything was better.  Bad news it only lasted a few weeks then I got used to the new found energy, so now I consider it just normal again.

Berlin,

If it's any comfort the likelihood of your treatment failing at this point is quite low. Even though you've been positive and treatment naive for a long time, that doesn't mean you won't respond well to medication.

I'm sure you'll be reporting excellent results to us very soon.

My numbers were similar to yours when I started Atripla back in December '06.  I was probably infected sometime around 2003 or so.  My numbers are slowly improving, as you can see below and show no resistance.

I do feel lots better since starting meds, but I had PCP at least a couple of months prior and had no energy, etc.  I also find I heal much quicker, don't have as many skin issues, etc.

I'll be curious to see how your numbers are and if you're improving quicker that mine.  I was getting stressed about it, but if I'm improving and feel good, that's what's important.  Take care.

Hey Berlin,

I'm also on the same as you only in 2 seperate pills Truvada/Sustiva.   Just had my 5 month check up and waiting for the current numbers.   However, I do feel much improved now.   Cuts are healing normally now.   My energy seems like I feel about 10 years younger and I'm not sleeping all the time or feeling lethargic anymore.

At first I wondered if my meds were working cause nothing seemed to be happening.   

Guess we are both waiting for lab results at the moment, but I have a feeling we're both gona get good news.

I started on a different combi and felt like shit for the first 6 months and thought the same that perhaps it wasnīt working but my numbers were steadily improving and when i changed my combi after a year as the side effects hadnīt eased and i had given it a good enough go i strted to feel better immediately for last 3 years ihave been taking truvada and viramune and am doing fine
