Derecho, round 2!
« on: June 13, 2013, 12:50:49 am »
Last June, we got hit horribly with the nasty storm that wrecked havoc in our area.  We are now on schedule to be hit with another one within the next couple of hours.  According to radar, we're dead center again.

They're already reporting close to 5,000 lightning strikes.

Last time we got hit with one was 2010.  But it was awful, people without power for over a week.   This area was right in the path, and several buildings were damaged, wide-spread flooding etc.   I don't believe, however, that the derecho actually happened here like the weather people were predicting.

I just received a NWS alert on my smartphone -- it's definitely one thing it's really good for. Looks like the worst for our area will hit around 5 pm. Guess I should turn on the weather channel as I just saw one map showing a bullseye of severity showing my locating right on the northern fringe.

(knock on wood) My power has only gone out once, and only for an hour, during my 8 years here. I think it's because I live next to the subway.

Scary! And I read that this is just round 1 -- something else comes through around 5 pm with massive loads of rain and our ground is already soaked from last week's Andrea remnants. I won't be surprised if there's major flooding in northeast PA and northern NJ.

ps: just heard thunder! If we get winds as predicted of 80 mph my apartment will literally sway.

pps: awesome video of lightening hitting the Sears Tower in Chicago on the Weather channel.

ppps: new NWS alert for Filthydelphia -- severe warnings now fine tuned for Baltimore up to Philadelphia. Awesome! I'm going to see the worst of this.

Thankfully, we were spared the worst of it.  We had surrounding communities that had barns and others structured completely destroyed.  It appeared to have just circled around us at the last moment.

The only scary part was around 2:30 am when the main storm hit and we suddenly lost power and the tornado sirens (a mere 100 yards from us) started blaring.  There were lots of reports of funnel clouds but none that touched down as far as I know.

Other than a little yard clean up, it was quite mild compared to last June 29th where we lost most of our shingles and my huge barbecue was sent half way down the block.  Our community lost power for over a week and we had oppressive heat and humidity during that period.  I had to spend that entire week helping people cut and clear all the downed trees.

This storm looks like it's tracking for many of you, so stay safe!!!

The most scary huge crack of lightening and thunder just happened. We're getting slammed. I hate being up on the fourth floor when storms like this happen.
