Test Result Indeterminate

Hey all

This is just to clear my mind more than anything, so thanks for listening

Around May last year I had sex with a guy (I'm also male), with me being the top. Actual intercourse didn't last that long, but during that time the condom somehow broke. I'm not entirely sure how. But I didn't notice until I had pulled out. I didn't ejaculate inside him or anything, but we took that as a sign to end with touching and stuff as we didn't have another condom available.

About 2 weeks after that I discovered a wart on the tip of my penis and went to a clinic near home. They treated it and due to it being my first time there they decided to run full tests. I knew about the 3 month waiting period so obviously the HIV test came back negative. At the time I for some reason wasn't actually particularly worried about HIV so I never got tested after 3 months, which was silly I know.

Fast forward to mid-February this year the wart came back as I heard it could potentially do. So I went to the clinic in town here (now being at university), and they gave me some treatment which worked great. Because it was my first time at this particular clinic they also wanted to do full tests. Went back a week later to get the results and everything was negative except HIV. They didn't tell exactly what was wrong other than that they had to send it to another lab for further testing.

This obviously freaked me out immensely and I couldn't stop thinking about it. Today I went back to find out the results from the other lab, but it came back indeterminate and they wanted another sample of blood. By this point my head is all over the place as I just wanted a definitive answer.

They are going to call me when the results come back in. But I just wanted to ask about the possibility of it coming back positive?

I mean, it's been about 10 months since I last had sex with anyone. I haven't since the incident mentioned above. So I'm guessing if I was indeed positive that by now my body should have produced a high amount of antibodies, which would have given a clear result no? So should I take this indeterminate result as a freak thing? That it'll probably come back negative in a week or so?

When the condom broke you had a risk albeit a very, very low level one.

Receiving an indeterminate result is not something that unusual. It happens for all sorts of reasons. I expect your ultimate result to be negative although I understand that getting an indeterminate is unnerving.

If that broken condom was your only risk then yes, I do expect you to test negative. I've never known of a confirmed case of transmission through a brief incident with a broken condom as you experienced.

I also expect you to ultimately test negative, because yes, after ten month you would have had a clear positive if you had been infected when the condom broke.

Sometimes underlying (and possibly undiagnosed) autoimmune disease can cause false positive results, and sometimes they just happen. A Western Blot test will clear it all up for you and that's the test they should be running now.
