Genvoya switch from Atripla?
« on: August 07, 2016, 10:24:01 am »
I've seen these threads on Poz.com but going to ask anyway: I've been on Atripla for 10 years and my CD4 is 904 and undetectable. ID Doc wants me to change to Genvoya but I've had NO problems with Atripla at all. Should I switch? Concerned about side effects but ID says there shouldn't be a problem, but if there's an issue I can switch back. Concerned about my first med switch here. All advice is appreciated!!

I presume your ID doc is recommending the change because Genvoya is a newer class of antiretroviral and may not be such a burden on your kidneys, liver, and bones, but I would ask him or her the precise reason for the recommended change?

Perhaps, your ID doc is recommending the change because today's guidelines, as you probably know, don't recommend Atripla as first-line treatment for HIV infection:

http://betablog.org/dhhs-atripla-no-longer-recommended-as-first-line-hiv-therapy/

The choice is yours.  Personally, I wouldn't be concerned about the med switch, if that is your only concern, since, your doctor has made it clear that you can always switch back.

I'm also on Atripla, but my ID doctor has not yet recommended a switch.  If he does, though, I'll need to wait until Genvoya is on my insurance's pharmacy formulary (so that would be a factor in switching for me).

Good luck with your decision.  You'll be fine either way!

My Doctor tried to do the same. 100% Vegan, don't drink, don't smoke, edible herb out only, die-hard Bikram Yogi, surfer and everything beach. Doctor several times suggested making the switch from Genvoya from Atripla. I have been on Atripla since 2011 and my #'s continue to improve every round of blood work. I do not see the sense is switching and have refused.

I say if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
