When I was in public school in the US in the 70's, the standard languages in all the suburban high schools were Spanish, French and German.
Spanish and French were neck and neck for numbers in my school. Only the smartie pants took German!
Isn't French still one of the standard foreign languages offered in run of the mill average public schools??
Also, am I remembering this incorrectly? In Junior High, everyone had to take a language and we couldn't quit until 2 years later in HS.

I took french in high school and college. However, growing up in california I often times mixed it up with Spanish. To this day I mix them up.
Ahhh Just writing that sentence reminds me of my college french teacher. I would always say french words in spanish and she would scream at me "En Francais! En Francais!!"

I watched Midnight in Paris on the train home tonight. It was OK.
The freebie morning newpaper, pretty popular and low brow, did an article last week, or so, about the cure for HIV. It was a big headline but the article was the same story being repeated here and there, about the new hopes.
I thought the headline was a bit reckless. In that tried and true argument about whether people can handle mixed messages or if safe sex agenda means we need some fear. It just seemed easy for the non-cricital or disinterested commuter reader to think that the cure is around the corner. No fear, in other words. And the meat of these articles is that there is new hope, but the cure is not just around the corner, that's for sure.

They also discovered/invented: germs, mayonnaise, radioactivity then many of the radioactive elements, neon, cinema, quite a large chunk of important medical science and practices, fabulous ways to float through the air, photography (debatable), the bikini, lacoste polo, bic pen, Yé-yé, and so on, etc etc etc. One of the great cultures, don't you think?
Somewhere this month I read that its an undeserved insult about the French not winning wars. They when through a 1000 years of History more or less and showed the French can hold their own well enough, often enough. Anyway the French Resistance was amazing, speaking of WWII.

Sure the Frenchies may have assisted the Yanks back in the 18th century, but it was probably just help with powdering John Adam's wigs or keeping General Washington in wooden teeth.
Why do you think they're so reluctant to get involved in conflict these days? Aside from not wanting to get muck on their neatly pressed uniforms, they know they'll be massacred the moment they mince out onto the battlefield.

When AIDS was first observed in the United States at the end of 1980, American and French researchers hastened to discover the virus responsible for the mysterious illness. Competition was fierce between French teams at the Institut Pasteur and teams working under American researcher Robert Gallo.

I'm not sure where u want to go, but that's meaningless. The European decendents have built America, and the French as well. There are no mysteries about that. (The ancients American maps says all). You might not be a French descendant, but others Americans are. And you are talking about their ancestors. Having the same blood, are they cowards ? You have mix since ? Us too, long time before you, and we have, Have you read the European History ? We have got so many wars here. Who is a coward among us ? Not one more than an other. In fact, not one, You may also want to thanks the weapons you are using to protect your country. They have been mostly built by European Researchers having immigrated to the USA.
As an European (being not French doesn't matter), my pride is to react, for those who are discovering your sense of humour, and for the people of my community (Europa).

Well, I watched this reportage with a lot of attention. It is very interesting to undestand investigation works at the beginning... and the waste of time, ressourses and energy because of the competence and legal and monetaries aspect between US and France in that time and that can be explained by the money tests and terapies can bring.
About french, belgium, spanish and so on, don´t worry... It is possible to know how the world was 200 or 300 years ago (and Belgium did not even existed), try to imanige it in 200 or 300 years more... Who is going to speak French? For sure, asian languages may get stronger and stronger....

Care to compare and contrast the economic power of each of those areas? It's rather established fact that wealth in the 13 colonies was higher per capita than in Britain, and more equitably distributed. Other than New Orleans, which had a large population for the time period, the rest of their territory was backwater fur trapping, and New Orleans wealth was directly tied to the wealth of sugar production in Saint Domingue (now Haiti) until, of course, the dark skinned folks kicked out the Frogs. And by the way, if you ever read a history of Haiti and I'm sure few of you have, the French were notorious for treating slaves about 10 times worse than the English or Spanish.

Pennsylvania Dutch is not Dutch as in Netherlands, it's German and Swiss, but the German-speaking part of Switzerland not the French.
So no, mine is from the Netherlands, or at least partially. Another part is German, specifically Bavarian. This is why I often enjoy dressing like a Nazi. It's also possible that what I think is the Dutch part is still all German, as New Netherlands colony was very diverse, as was Amsterdam as a port and melting pot, and there were a fair amount of Germans that immigrated to the Mohawk Valley (as in Albany and points west like Schenectady) but any documents would have shown them having come from Amsterdam and not their original area in Germany, if that makes any sense.
I'm also descended from the illustrious Colonel Robert Love, Augusta County, Virginia (1760) and a proud revolutionary soldier.
Also supposedly our surname is a hillbilly misspelling and should be Seward, as in being related to the Seward family that produced William Seward, 12th Governor of NY, US Senator, and Secretary of State under Lincoln... and the man who convinced the government to buy Alaska. That is also a very early American family from the late 1600's on the eastern shore of Maryland.

My maiden name, Smith, was originally Schmidt, until WWI broke out and my great, great (great?) grandfather changed the name to avoid the anti-German sentiment in America. My Schmidt ancestors originally came from Germany in the 1840s and were simple farmers. I've been told that the surname Schmidt is most common in SE Germany, around the Black Forest area. I'm 1/2 German, 1/4 Irish and 1\4 Scottish. :) And no, Miss P, I don't have any "illustrious" ancestors - but I couldn't care less.
