Question to all about Christmas carols...
« on: December 12, 2006, 07:12:56 pm »
They're in the air... they're almost getting annoying... but which one drives you completely up the walls, and which one do you like?  And thanks to their ubiquity, even people who don't celebrate Christmas can join in on this one!

I don't know what it is, but something about the Little Drummer Boy gets on my nerves like very little else can.

I do dig the wassail one... because it's all about getting people to give you free drinks.  ;)

I did... that wasn't so bad... I guess it's when the guy sings it falsetto... maybe there's a traumatic childhood memory that I buried associated with that song.

Maybe it's the absurd onomatopoeia (rumpa-pum-pum  >:()  ...  If I never hear that song again it'll be too soon

I love Christmas music, it is the biggest part of the holiday for me.   This is just about the only time of the year that I actually play the piano anymore (and I haven't done that much yet this month, hopefully soon!)

My least favorite is 12 Days of Christmas.   I seem to play White Christmas a lot, and I love Karen Carpenter's Merry Christmas Darling....I love them all, too many to name a favorite.

At church, we use Once in Royal David's City as the recessional on Christmas Eve, and it has become one of my fav. hymns.

Hugs & Merry Christmas to all!

My favorite is Carol of the Bells....I'd have to agree with Alan and Queen, my least favorite is the 12 days of Christmas.

Little Drummer Boy is pretty good, sung by Bob Seger

I heard this brilliant parody of 12 days sung by a woman (I wish I knew who) called The 12 Drinks of Christmas... and as she goes through the song, she gets progressively more and more drunk.. and the piano accompanying her also screws up... it's pretty hilarious... especially when she ends one part with "and a bird with the fruit on the limb" or starts of the nine by saying... "nine.... ni... nine.... mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord!"

And that song is pretty bad.  Yeah.

There is a version of 'Little Drummer Boy' that I do like:

Bing Crosby singing it in a duet with David Bowie.

That parody of 'Blue Christmas' that sounds like Porky Pig...with some really drunk bastard laughing his ass off in the background.

And, I confess, a weak spot for Manheim Steamroller's 'Silent Night'.  Even this Grinch warms up to that one.

"Dominick the Donkey"  ( http://members.shaw.ca/cybernana/funpage/dominick/dominick.htm ) is the most irritating Christmas song ever written.

Honorable mention to "Christmas Shoes" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhFq9RZM-Gc ), which makes me hurl every time.

Every day when I get in the car, they are playing that awful song "Christmas Shoes" on the radio.   I wonder why the songwriter chose SHOES as the subject?  It is about the little boy's mother being terminally ill, and about to meet Jesus and he wants her to look pretty..... my mind pictures a little urchin at Wal-Mart holding up a pair of those tacky sequined flip flops.....

 ;D

Wouldn't "Christmas Robe" have made more sense?   Just sayin......

I'm apparently really weird, then.

Everyone at my work likes that song, too.

The most hated seems to be "Silver Bells," which is different... I guess.  :P

I agree with thunter the Bing Crosby/David Bowie version of Drummer Boy is cool.  I love "O Holy Night"  unless sung by Celine Dion, Whitney Houston or any other Diva.  Least favorite has to be 12 days, seems it will never end

I hate and l mean hate Walking In A Winter Wonderland and Jingle Bell rock. Might have to do with the fact l hear them over and over in every store and mall l walk into.

I like Perry Como and his singing of guess what Little Drummer Boy.

Also it is cheesy and bad Driving Home For Christmas it reminds me of all the Christmas Eve's l have worked and the roads get quiet and people actully smile when we pull up next to them.

Happy singing all.

I like "you aint getting shit for christmas" by red peters!!!

Here are the lyrics......

They say Christmas is a time for giving - at least that's what the good book says, and at our house every Christmas Eve my son and daughter and their families drive down from the big city for an old fashioned family holiday. Ma dresses the house up like a Christmas card, you can hear her in the kitchen singing while she's baking cookies for the children. Ma spends hours wrapping the presents she's been buying since last August and hangs all the stockings over the fireplace. The morning of, I cut me down the prettiest darn Christmas tree you ever saw in your life. Eh, this year we really outdid ourselves. You know, Ma and I are getting on in our years so we decided to give the kids tax-free cash gifts of $10,000 apiece.

(barking)

I reckon it was around noon, I heard the dogs barking (yells "Come Rags!, Come Guzzler!") and there was Jim the mailman in his old santa cap, coming up the walk teasing the dogs, holding a package. Well he handed it over to me and says "Pappy, looks like you got an overnite package from your daughter". I went back in the kitchen and Ma tore it open. To our horror we unwrapped a fruitcake with a note that read...

"Aloha Ma & Dad, at the last minute we got a cheap fare on the internet and went to Hawaii. Hold onto our gifts until after the first of the year. Love, Princess."

Well, Ma's heart was broken and I felt a lump in my throat as I thought to myself...

You Ain't Getting Shit For Christmas
You can shove that fruitcake up your ass
well you ain't getting shit
no you ain't getting dick
you ain't getting shit for Christmas

You know, Ma hasn't had a drink in 20 years and I've been off the sauce a while myself and heck, if there was ever an excuse to start drinking again. (sfx-doorbell) Who in tarnation could that be, Junior and his family? It was some delivery fella standing there holding what looked like a fruitcake tin with a card attached.

"Pop, the company's condo is free this week and you know how much Pumpkin and I love Hilton Head. Please forward our gifts to this address."

(sfx-cork and pouring sound)

Hey Ma, save some for me. Well, Ma took a coniption things turned ugly. She started breaking things and hurled the turkey and those two fruitcakes right through the front window, the whole time she was yelling...

You Ain't Getting Shit For Christmas
You can shove that fruitcake up your ass
well you ain't getting shit
no you ain't getting dick
you ain't getting shit for Christmas

(repeat, fade)

LIFE is not a race to the grave with the intention of arriving safely
in a pretty and well-preserved body, but, rather to skid in broadside,
thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming--WOW! WHAT A
RIDE!!!

Worst song:  any of them that are being sung by current "pop artists"...besides, I am brainwashed by the stuff immediately after Thanksgiving at my workplace...I'd like to rewire a few stations at Muzak.

Best song:  any and all Christmas songs off of The Carpenters Christmas CD (please, don't throw rotten tomatoes at me...I love The Carpenters) - and - the same goes for Johnny Mathis singing Christmas music...delicious...Michael Buble has a few nice ones out there too.

Hey!  The Carpenters rock!  I'm being completely non-ironic... and this is coming from the bottom of my 70s punk and electroclash loving heart.  Me love the Carpenters longtime.

I hate and l mean hate Walking In A Winter Wonderland and Jingle Bell rock.

"JBR", ugh, almost as bad as "LDB"

"Winter Wonderland" is okay though. "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear" is nice (a favorite in 3rd grade glee clubs)

My favorite used to be "Sleigh Ride" by the Carpenters... or pretty much any Carpenters Christmas song... until I heard "Pretty Little Dolly" by Mona Abboud on the radio one year.  It's been my favorite ever since and still cracks me up every time I listen to it.  The song title is a link you can click to hear it.

Yeah.

Her name is Fay McKay.  She has a website where you can order her CDs.  You can hear the original "12 Daze of Christmas" here.  Just scroll down and click on "12 Daze of Christmas" and a player will pop up.  Another version can be heard here.  Just click on the RealAudio link beside "12 Daze"... of course you'll have to have RealAudio installed to play it.  I think the second one may even be funnier than the original.

Merry Christmas!

Teresa, I love Elvis's "Blue Christmas".

I heard the dreaded "Christmas Shoes" no less than 3 times today on the radio.
That has to be the one that is "on my nerves" the worst this season.   The tune is nice, but the words just irritate me....

OK, I'm a gay man, I understand the importance of "shoes" (right Sue?) but wouldn't another garment have made a better and more sensible song topic?

You promised me you'd bring me one, you remember who I am.

'Cause I'm the little girl who you made sit right on your hand

Nothing's more anti-seasonal than Grace Jones' version of Little Drummer Boy as performed on Pee Wee's (as in Herman) X-mas special in 198?.  What was SHE on?  Of course, there's always Joan Larson's 'A Lay in a Manger.'

OK.  Twisted Sister just performed 'O Come, All Ye Faithful' on Leno last night.

Though it sounds markedly like 'We're Not Gonna Take It', it still scores a spot on my list.

Just pleeeeeeeeze.....Keep that damnable 'Grandma-Reindeer' song far, far away from me!  Ugh.
