Winter.
« en: Noviembre 20, 2013, 05:48:58 pm »
How I'm feeling now:

“I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says "Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.”
― Lewis Carroll, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass

How I feel by February 1st:

“A lot of people like snow. I find it to be an unnecessary freezing of water.”
― Carl Reiner

Meteorologically speaking winter begins on December 1st. We are almost there. The forecast for us on Sunday is a high of 34 F. and a low of 20 F. with gusty winds of 22 mpg. If the winds start early in the day the wind chill factor will be in the single digits.

Snuggle in. Put on those slippers. :)

When did Winter start occurring on December first instead of the solstice?   ;)

As a person who loves this time of year, I'm looking forward to it.  Mainly because it's about the only time of the year where I don't feel like I'm overheating.

My favorite season is fall, and unfortunately I had to spend most of it indoors this year recovering from this, that and the other. Same thing happened in 2011 too. In 2012 I missed the entire summer, but that was OK because I avoided the heat.

Maybe winter won't be so cold, as in daytime highs of 35F and I can get out more. I don't mind it in the 40's, and I enjoy the odd blizzard because not having a car mean little inconvenience.

But I'm already looking forward to the Virginia Gold Cup in May 2014! Tally Ho!

Yes, but half of Montreal is underground, isn't it? Do you use the "underground city" a lot? I haven't been to Montreal in ages and need to come visit. I've always gotten along with most Canadians I've known -- many used to jaunt down to NYC from Montreal and Toronto for clubbing, though both cities have great clubs on their own.

There is a vast under ground that connects most of the mass transit to major areas of the city.  You can use the underground to go to many areas of the city and they connect to malls and major buildings.  Some buildings have connections to other areas, so it is feasible to enter a metro, do all your shopping and return home, to your starting metro stop, without having to go outside.

It comes in very handy when the temp is -15 with gusts of 50kph.  The hardest part of winter in Montreal is not the temperature so much, but the wind that whips down the St. Lawrence.

Tonight it is going down to 64 here and I will sleep under the throw my friend crocheted when he quit smoking. It is three shades of grey and the size of a coverlet.

Theyer my family had a pharmacy or what you all would call a chemist. They had tasty dexedrine - filled people prescriptions and sold a lot of make up and perfumes. He only stocked cigarettes and one or two inexpensive cigars for the customers convenience.

There was another shop next to us and I'm not sure if you would call it a tobacconists or a newsagents. They had all manner of newspapers, magazines and penny candy. They also had cigarettes, a larger selection of cigars and pipes and chewing tobacco.  There was a shop a few blocks away that specialized in all kinds of tobacco and pipes. A constant poker game went on in the back room and my grandfather would send me there with a sealed envelope the day before an important horse race.

When I spoke of the kids that lived in "the patch" they were the miners children who lived in the company houses around the coal breaker much like in Wales.

So you had a Chemist, next door to a Newsagent and a illegal gambling den in a very pro smokers right,s area.. The patch sounds interesting to me as my Mothers family where Northumbrian miners and there is/was a huge emphasis on household and personal cleanliness . I have also come across similar communities in Wales where the "tidy" house holds great sway.

However what also held great sway was/is an ability to never feel the cold and therefore go out Saturday night dressed in one layer off cotton, drink alcohol in huge quantities , profess everlasting love for your and your Kith and kin just before a immensely violent exercise in group fighting occurred , which maybe your Mother was not so keen on.

I love all the differant use,s off English , a friend off mine from Bombay also does and we would save up example,s for each other. It also makes me laugh when white English people talk about the "proper" use of "English" when our language steals and use,s others so much. Bit like our Victorian foreign policy.

WINTER is officially here in the Northwoods. No snow, but the first signs are the 'critters' that find their winter home where ever they can and hunker down. My new 'pet' is....I hope....a possum that is living under my porch. I say HOPE because when it came out tonight as I walked outside, it was dark and it may have been a rat. I couldn't really tell because my screaming like a girl frightened it so much that it hissed and ran back under. I don't think possums hiss.

Yes a possum hisses big time. Raspy.
I grew up in SE Minnesota but never came across a possum until I moved to Connecticut. I thought they would be a cuddly sort of animal but that was childhood fiction writing. lol.

I'm grateful -last year it was a skunk. The smell was vile! I swear that thing had a diet of cabbage soup and beans. I finally got relief when Jackie, the myopic crazy cat lady snared it in one of her cat traps. What happened after that I do not know and I do not WANT to know.  This place is like Sesame Street for the psychotic.

Hawks are amazing to watch. We live in a valley with hills very close by. Cool birds.

(They tend to leave a pile of feathers in our yard to remind me of nature's way now and again.)

and Dano.... lol.  :)

I spent an afternoon with a Falconer and his I think Sparrow Hawk , the hunting display was a privilege to watch. The bird who he had raised from a chick flew free for a couple off hours after the training bit was over , out off sight to me , however he said it would return when it was ready and it did , they clearly had established a co relationship. the bird made itself comfortable in an inside pocket off his wax jacket.

That is so cool . I think birds are fascinating and beautiful but I'm a little frightened to handle them . I had a friend who had a house full of birds and some of them were aggressive and I saw what they could do first hand when pissed off and I have a new respect for them because of it .

Brrr...

We are at the high temp of the day right now at 27F. Winds today at 25-35MPH with gusts above 40MPH. The pond is covered with a sheet of ice. Heavy rain on Wednesday with flurries on Thanksgiving.

I still need to get out and buy our Christmas tree. Brrr....
