Anyone have trouble with waxing?
« on: August 15, 2008, 11:28:42 pm »
I got my eyebrows waxed this evening and had what my esthetician called "lifting".  Some of the dead skin cells came off with the wax and left my skin raw and "burned" looking.  And it feels like a burn but it isn't. She uses organic wax and it wasn't hot so I know she didn't burn me and I don't think it is an allergic reaction.  The first thing she asked me was if I was on any medications. I of course said "no" because I haven't disclosed to her since she takes universal precautions. Now I am wondering if it could be due to my meds (Isentress & Truvada) that I take.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this. My skin is super sensitive and has only gotten worse as I get older and take meds. I'm seeing a dermatologist this week any way so it will be a perfect time for me to ask him about it.  But I'd like to hear from other positive waxers or estheticians who may have the same problem.

Thank you!

Hi PM,

I haven't had direct experience with this, but funny enough my daughter and a few of her mates were sitting in the kitchen just the other night talking about this very thing. They all had stories to relate about either themselves or a mate getting this burned eyebrow thing and the cause seems to be moisturiser. For some reason, if you moisturise before having your eyebrows waxed, it makes it easier for the wax to lift off some of the top layer of skin, leaving you with that burned look.

Evidently the person doing the wax is supposed to ask if you've recently moisturised but they often don't. As I say, I don't have direct experience with this as I've never waxed, but I found the conversation between the girls fascinating. The lengths we women will go to to look fashionable!  :o

So, did you moisturise?

But anyway, ouch, it sounds painful and I hope you find out what happened so you can avoid it happening again.

Ann

Hi PM

Well, I wax myself, eyebrows, bikini and legs.  I am not in the business but have plenty of friends that are, so they got me the wax and showed me how to do it.  Saves me a lot of money.  It sounds like to me from my experience that when you do not pull the skin tight enough and pull the wax just right you can cause bruising burned look.  So maybe she did not pull your skin tight enough.  I have never heard of the moisturizing thing and my pamphlet that came with my waxing kit did not say anthing about that either.  But it would be worth a try the next time you get your brows done.  What could it hurt.

Let me know how it works out.

Sunseeker.

I have had the same problem for years with eyebrow waxing, even before I was infected. My skin is just too sensitive. I get my eyebrows threaded instead. I do get bikini waxes and I don't have a problem there. I think everybody is just different... :)

I've had this happen before, but it one area.  This time it happened on a couple of areas.  I hadn't put moisturizer on; I'd just come straight from work.  My esthatician always cleans and dries my skin before waxing.  And she definitely holds the skin taught enough.  I forgot to mention that I had gone to an Arbonne skin care party 2 nights before and sampled some of their products. I'm not knocking Arbonne because the product felt good at the time, but I am wondering if it made my skin irritated. I have really sensitive skin and ususally use Dermalogica products only because they aren't harsh.

I'd like to find someone that does threading near me but haven't been able to.  I'll mention everyone's suggestions to the dermatologist when I see him this week.  Thank you for the input!

Wishing you all happy waxing & tweezing times!  ;D

That is a perfect magazine name!  I wonder if I could pitch it to some big cosmetic line???  We could be millionaires Ann!
