Anyone want to join?

Okay, here's the deal. Since starting Truvada, Reyetaz, and Norvir on the 28th of October, I've developed the most amazingly noxious farts imaginable! I'm talking farts so dangerously smelly you can taste the death that crawled out of my ass and is now floating around the room. Get the point?

What can I do to stop this? I don't care that I fart. I'm pretty good at disguising the sound or making it quiet, I just can't have this horrific, treacherous stench seeping out of my colon when I'm around people who might actually want to interact with me until my ass gas knocks them out of their misery.

Help please, my poz brothers and sisters!

I had the same problem with norvir when I was on it and it only got worse in time . If ever a human had a right to be proud of a fart it would surely be a norvir fart . My gassy bulldog decided on her own to sleep on the other side of the house from my bedroom after week two on norvir .

I was actually happy when I failed to respond to the regimen with norvir in it . I'm back on atripla and not complaining about it this time .

I've been farting for yrs. I thought it was HIV/AIDS and all of the Meds, but last yr. after 16 yrs. I found out it really had nothing to do with HIV/AIDS at all, I have G.I. Disease, and I've had this for a very long time, I just have to watch what I eat, I still fart & still have smelly gas, and when it get's too bad, and my belly swells-up I know it's time to see my G.I Doctor for a 10 to 14 day dose of antibiotics  ???

Silent but violent!

Are you eating turkey or chicken perhaps a bit too often?  Just kidding... my cat, The General, has been letting them rip lately and I think its because he has been eating some baked ground turkey that I fixed for him.  I doubt it is directly related to your HIV status buddy.  Just saying.....

I was just on antibiotics in an attempt to fix an ear infection I am dealing with, and they only made my G.I. problems worse. In fact, my doc and I were starting to worry I'd gotten C. diff again. But alas, when the antibiotics were stopped, my violent diarrhea stopped too. But now I'm left with the consequences; a painfully fissured bumhole.

I've seen the gastroenterologist, several in fact, including one at my semi-local teaching hospital for years and had tests left right and center. But the gas thing is pretty much in my mind directly related to the meds. I was on these same meds for a period of a couple months back in 2010 and if I can recall correctly I had the same gas of death problem then too!

Does anyone know what to do for anal fissures while we're at it?

I've been on post-foot surgery anti-biotics for three weeks (Bactrim, actually) and my stools have been miraculously fabulous. Once I'm done the course I'll plow my innards with some fancy probiotics from Whole Foods that a friend recommended.

Sweetheart, having surgery on the order of 40 stitches is no laughing matter. Not to mention I have to go through the entire ordeal with the other foot in a few months.

Oh, and spend ~$400 on custom orthotic insoles which are not covered by fucking Medicare and/or Medicaid.

Awwwwww, what happened darling? Birth defect? Old age? Run over by a car?

Trust me, I know the pain of things not being covered by Medi----. I have had to buy almost $500 glasses that weren't covered, having been paying my psychologist out of pocket for years, as well as the dentist, etc. I unfortunately do not have Medicare to covers the gaps Medicare leaves behind. But I feel your pain. Both tend to leave huge holes. Sorry hun!

I sympathize with you Odyssey; I've had this problem on several HIV meds. I had abdominal pains for a few years (10 years ago); they did 2 cat scans a few months apart & never found anything wrong.
More recently, I had this gas problem on Kaletra. When I was taken off of Kaletra and put on Prezista/Norvir instead, 90% of the gas problem went away. So, it might be worth a talk with your doc about trying a different cocktail.

It can stink even with no farting. Is it thru the skin?  :o

But you shouldn't really give a damn.

Hi Oddy

Sorry you are still not feeling 100%, all I can offer, as far as home treatment goes, is to soak in a bath of warm water for about15 minutes, a couple of times a day, 3 if you can do it.

Eat as much fiber as you can and take in more fluids, also using stool softeners (laxatives) to help ease the pain when going to the toilet, but please talk with your doctor first, you shouldn't take laxitives for long periods.

Let us know how you get on..

Is this a side-effect of Atripla then? I started treatment in September & pretty much after about a month or so of starting, i've been excessively flatulent!. Sometimes I do get mild stomach cramps & soft/loose stools in the mornings ( I take my atripla around 10pm) and I'm getting to the point now where I am really worried.

Would it settle? could it be something else? anyone else had such an experience on Atripla? & what are their tricks / food items did they find that helped minimize the side-effects?

Thank you guys!

Hi,

Back to the OP, I do have the same problem...

Strangely enough, and I have not explanation for this, it ONLY occurs when I am home: never at a restaurant or in a (corporate cafeteria).

Too bad... In a cafeteria, no one could figure out its is me, but, at home....

I have used branded probiotics to no effect. I have use intensive lactobacillus probiotics (No for sale in the US) (and I raise my own...): very effective! not farts!

Go figure...

I am not on Truvada, so , I do not think that the meds, per se, are the cause.

The immune system in the gut is naturally tuned down (otherwise commensal bacteries, that are usefull, could not survive). With immune activation some (not all) bacteries get killed , may be by the the meds, may be by the immune system that is over activated.

Findings the one supplementation that work, may require a bit of trial and error

Probiiotic supplementation is been used by farmers to make poultry gain weight faster, so one should be carefull...

Not much experience here, but already in the fart patrol. Day 4 of truvada and RAL and 1.5 hours after the truvada.... Gurgle.. Whoosh... My dog hasn't left the bed yet, but I am getting looks.

I'm taking a probiotic capsule and live yoghurt, it seems to be lessening. And like Matt says I make sure to eat a decent sized meal with the blue pill.

I Prefer a fart to un-checked Harry HIV  tho  8)
Good luck.

Cheers

Have you guys heard of activated carbon or activated charcoal underwear? It is claimed to neutralized smells of farts. I haven't tried the products so I don't know whether it works as claimed.

Hi,

I found this interesting:

http://www.drlwilson.com/ARTICLES/DIGESTION.htm

the section about putrefaction provide some background rationale to my self experimenting of Lacto Bacillus as a pH lowering agent

many recommendations in this page make a lot of sense (IMHO)

Somehow, I had kind of found by myself some of hte recommendations made here.
I'll try some of more from this doc. and see.

The Lacto bacillus worked for me. so not a problem any longer. But there must be some less intrusive means.

Hope this helps

I have never had a problem with gas from Atripla or any other drug.  I do like chili and people always say it gives them gas and bowel problems at times.  I make great chili and its spicey but I do add cinnamon to my recipe and you do not notice it but for some reason it takes the gas out of the beans.  You might try using it and it is good for the heart so an added bonus.

I  would suggest that if your a smoker, don't light a match or you might blow your self into the next room.

Not funny at all - after 3 mo taking Complera, because of farting problem, I am ready to go back to Atripla, which gives me nightmares, horrible headaches, but I am rather live rest of my life with nightmares, rather than being a walking fart machine. Does anybody know if this problem listed in the official list of Complera's side effects?

There are many alternatives to both meds. More pills per day, but everything has a price.

How dare you insult JK with this absurd accusation , like many here , JK gives sound scientific peer reviewed advice and does it on a volunteer basis . You better do a little research before you start hurling insults towards one of the most informative and compassionate members we have here . From the tone of your post and the fact that nobody said a thing to set you off it seems you are the one that needs watching , somethings not right about your post here and you don't seem to realize that this is mostly a forum of people looking to give and receive support , there is no ulterior motive .

If you don't want to listen to other peoples opinion or take the advice given you can do so without the bad attitude you are showing here .

I sound like an HIV negative person? That's adorable!

Also, I would like very much to be fired. First I'd have to have a job, but with the unemployment benefits I would be able to do my fart-promoting outreach. Perhaps if people would donate some cash to me, I could reconfigure my car to emit foul smelling belches and travel the countryside promoting farty drugs. Pimp my ride to promote Personal Methane!

I'm seeing the beginnings of a crusade here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3xe9BPIvCs

so tonight i went to a buffet place with some friends. i had this insane craving for hot dogs right before we left, so i ate two, but i was still starving. at the buffet we went crazy...
i had: two huge pulled pork sandwiches(bbq mmmm), one bag of potato chips, one plate of spicy fries, one burger with bacon and cheese, a scoop of ice cream, and two red velvet cupcakes. i washed it all down with three or four lemonades...needless to say, i'm stuffed.

i took off my pants already but this is she shirt i wore to dinner-it's so tight i can barely get it over my belly again...
my friends were looking at me like i was crazy when i was going for seconds on dessert after we'd already eaten so much, and probably that my shirt was getting a little small-do you think i look pregnant?. i was starting to feel my belly gurgle a lot on the way home, and now it feels huge and bloated. i tried sitting up and rubbing it, but i had to lie down. it feels like i swallowed a beach ball...it's hard to move around with this big swollen belly. i wish somebody could come rub and listen to my belly...

what do you think? comments/messages!
