Infection Risk,Anxious of test result
« on: December 16, 2016, 06:55:55 am »
Hello, good day to everyone, thanks for allowing me to join this forum  ;)

I have been lurking around this forum for several weeks, and I have several questions to ask. On 13 Sept 16 I had an unprotected vaginal intercourse with a man whose HiV status I didnt know yet ( Stupid choice, I know ). It was only one time and he didnt finish inside. On 16 october I had flu-like symptoms such as mild fever, headache, sore throat, cough and night sweats. It lasted around six days and I was fine afterwards.

However being a paranoid person on 7 Dec i decided to do HiV and syphilis testing in a local hospital ( which is a recommended hospital to Hiv+ patients in my country ) using a Rapid method I think? The test came out non reactive for both.

The question is, as 13 sept - 7 dec arent exactly 3 months full, is there still a possibility that it was  false negative? I had another HiV test scheduled in another clinic just to make sure on 19 Dec, is that test going to be conclusive ( meaning I dont have to test anymore after the result come out or I still have to check after a six month period? )

Hi Kirika,  First off you were not being paranoid getting tested. Unprotected intercourse is really the only way HIV is sexually transmitted.  Now, a negative result will rarely change after 6 weeks and technically a negative result is confirmed at 13 weeks.
Go on and do the last test for peace of mind and I'm sure you will receive a negative result for that one also. No further testing will be necessary for this exposure.

Best, Wade

Hello Wade, thanks for the quick reply  :)!

I am still worried and depressed because the "flu" I had back then in October 16 sounds a lot like I had seroconversion ( Up until now I was rarely ill ) Just as you said, I read somewhere that 95% people can be diagnosed after 6-8 weeks, I hope i am not the 5% group that needs more than 3 months for enough HIV antigen to be detected :(( Some ppl also tested a few times and the results vary from reactive to non-reactive, that's what I am most afraid of  :'(

well, i guess the only thing I can do now is wait and pray until I received the final testing on dec 19th...

Getting the flu has nothing to do with HIV, your negative result will be confirmed in a few days . I can tell you I have not personally seen a negative result change after 6 weeks,13 weeks is conclusive and is standard. Stop your worrying and go out and enjoy life.
