Therapeutic Dendritic Cell Vaccine In Phase I
« on: October 24, 2009, 11:38:47 am »
A therapeutic dendritic cell vaccine from Baylor is in Phase I. In the recent HIV vaccine conference held in Paris it was reported that dendritic cells are largely responsible for elite controllers being able to hold HIV at bay.

HIV Therapeutic Vaccine using immune response from dendritic cells enters Phase 1

It’s always interesting to see scientists trying new things to make a therapeutic vaccine. Here scientists from the Baylor Institue of Immunology Research are using Dendritic Cells to generate a strong immune response and keep the virus at bay.  The trial is still in Phase 1, so we can’t say much now.

Over the last few years, scientists at the Baylor Institute for Immunology Research have identified certain proteins common with all HIV infections. Researchers then extract dendritic cells from a patient’s body and then attach those HIV proteins to the cell. The entire cell is then multiplied and injected back into the patient’s body.

“If we can get this immunologic response then obviously we’re hoping that we’re going to be able to keep the HIV at bay and keep people healthier for longer,” said Dr. Louis Sloan of the North Texas Infection Diseases Consultants.
