Can you get hiv from sharing cocaine
« on: November 25, 2006, 04:32:52 pm »
I have been really stressed lately because of something stupid that i did. I have been married for 9 years and I cheated on my husband for one of my ex-boyfriends who was just released from prison of 7 years. I really didn't think about what i did now I'm suffering. we had a sexual encounter and didn't use protection the thing is really he did not cum at all and we were not able to finish i say the hold thing my have lasted about 2minutes at the most. Then i went for testing 4 days later and they explain to me that i would have to come back in three months for hiv and herpes. I then got a phone call saying that all of my test were negative but i tested positive for herpes and that he could have not gave it to me. but i been i one relationship for years and me and my husband is  close and i know he didn't give it to me. so then that made me worry about hiv. i soon became ill i thought it was ars my neck became really stiff as if my lymph nodes was really huge,i then started running a low grade fever, diarrhea, muslepain joint pain flu like symptoms right after 2 weeks after possible exposer i had a run down feeling that lasted for about 4 weeks. I have been tested at 2weeks 3weeks and 3 days away from 5 weeks witch was 33 day after exposer and the test have been negative i really want to know am i really negative  i am still stressed and still feel achy sometime  I was thinking maybe it was the herpes virus i don't know but i have learned a leason i cry everyday mainly when i look at my kids they need me and i went out and did this stupid thing

ineed,

The vast majority of people who have actually been infected with hiv will seroconvert and test positive by six weeks, with the average time to seroconversion being only 22 days. This means that the negative result you have so far is very encouraging, but not conclusive.

Symptoms or even the lack of symptoms mean absolutely nothing when it comes to hiv infection. Only hiv testing will inform you of your true hiv status. Don't forget that we are in the middle of cold and flu season, so don't let the illness you experienced get you down. If it had anything to do with hiv, you would most likely have tested positive on your last test.

As for the herpes, if you ever get cold sores on your lips, this is the same virus and will cause a positive herpes test. It is also possible to have herpes and never have outbreaks, so there is no way of knowing when you were infected with herpes. It might not have anything to do with your experience with your ex.

Hang in there and try to relax while you wait for your final test. In future, please try to remember to use condoms outside your marriage. You might be thinking "never again", but you never know.

ineed,

Herpes 1 and herpes 2 don't necessarily show up where they're supposed to. It's entirely possible to get type 1 on your genitals or type 2 on your mouth. If what you experienced recently was a primary outbreak, you would have known. Primaries are usually quite painful - as are any herpes outbreaks. You'd know. It's quite possible you've had herpes before your indescretion.

Don't forget that it is flu season. With the negative test result you have from 33 days, I'm fully expecting you to continue to test negative - but you do need to confirm that at three months. Try to stay productively busy while you wait for your final test and do yourself a favour - stay off hiv internet sites.

ineed,

From what you report - namely that your illness started around two weeks before you tested - I really can't see your test results changing. The illness that some people experience (not everyone does) is your body's reaction to your immune system creating antibodies to hiv. You would have tested positive (or inconclusive) if your illness was ARS. The symptoms you report are completely consistent with flu.

Your family would not necessarily also get the flu.

You are just going to have to stay productively busy and try to put hiv out of your mind while you wait for your conclusive test. I'm expecting it to be negative.

In an analysis of people who seroconvert after a known exposure, the average time taken to detect antibodies after exposure is 22 days. It is an average.
NB. Any advice about HIV is given in addition to your own medical advice and not intended to replace it. You should never make clinical decisions based on what anyone says on the internet but rather check with your ID doctor first. Discussions from the internet are just that - Discussions. They may give you food for thought, but they should not direct you to do anything but fuel discussion.

Ineed,

While an eight week negative result is unlikely to change, only a three month test is conclusive.

Need,

A six week test is only conclusive in Massachusetts - when you've tested in Massachusetts. We have told you that the vast majority of people who have actually been infected with hiv will seroconvert and test positive by six weeks, with the average time to seroconversion being only 22 days. This information hasn't changed.

Your test result is unlikely to change. Put this out of your mind for now and get on with the holiday celebrations.

need,

As we have already told you, the only test that we recognise as being conclusive is the one at three months. Although your eight week negative result is unlikely to change, for a conclusive result you must test at three months.

First of all KUDOS for using the condom.  Secondly, please dont use the word "clean" when you speak of your ex's status.  That implies that I am "dirty" and I assure you I am not.

As for the condom slipping, this happens sometimes, it does not increase the risk of HIV transmission.  He had a condom on and thats what matters, you were protected.  I would not test over this incident because you didnt have a risk.  You can take that to the bank!

You need to stop cheating on your husband first of all!!!  Stop putting him at risk!!!!  It's not fair to him!!  I'm not here to make you feel guilty, you should already.  If you are afraid you may have contracted HIV this time around, you can do nothing but get a test!!  You've been in here twice before, and you know all that is to be known or suggested.  We all make mistakes, consequences suck, but you must wait it out!!  I wish you luck.  After your negative results, please BE FAITHFUL to your husband!!!

I know I'm not a doctor, that is why the advice I gave was to get a test.  I understand when people need comfort, I've been there before.  Yes, I don't know the situation between her and her husband, but putting anybody at risk is just not right!  Whether their marriage is perfect, or a disaster, you still hold the same responsibilities!  I've screwed up and regretted it, just trying to help people when I have been in the same situation!!  NEVER meant to upset anybody at all.  Just trying to help people appreciate what they have.

In addition to what Rod milker said.  we do not judge people's morality on this forum.  We help assess risk and answer questions on HIV transmission.

You need to refrain from posting here please.

Ineedhelp please ignore those posts they arent helping.

   Please do not start a new thread every time you have another question or thought - regardless if you think your questions are related to each other or not. It helps us to help you when you keep all your thoughts or questions in one thread and it helps other readers to follow the discussion. Additional threads will be merged.

I've merged your new thread into your original thread - where you should post all your additional thoughts or questions. It helps us to help you when you keep all your additional thoughts or questions in one thread. It doesn't matter how long it has been since you last posted in your thread or if the subject matter is different.

Please also read through the Welcome Thread so you can familiarize yourself with our Forum Posting Guidelines. Thank you for your cooperation.

You've been coming here for long enough to know that you're not going to become infected by sharing things like cups or glasses with someone who is poz. You're also not going to become infected with hiv by sharing a straw for snorting drugs.

And you need to know that your snotty attitude isn't appreciated here. You disparage this woman because she sometimes uses drugs, but what did you do yourself? You used drugs. So leave the attitude at the door.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts
