AMG 08: Passports Please!
« on: February 21, 2008, 07:13:08 pm »
Just a friendly reminder, that all US citizens need passports starting this calendar year to travel to and from Mexico.  Currently the State Dept.'s web site states that processing times are 4-6 wks.  My parents renewed theirs in the past 6 months and it was more like 8 wks, so just a heads up on getting this going soon should you need either to renew and existing expired passport or apply for a completely new one.

You can find answers to questions, as well as appropriate forms to download and print out, etc. here:

http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html

I'm currently renewing mine, and just have to prance downtown to the large post office to have my passport pictures taken.  Other than that it's a $75 fee.  Not sure if the fee for a completely new one is the same or a bit higher, but the information will be in the link if you poke around.

Actually it's $100; $75 + a $25 "execution" fee.

Actually this is confusing.  The form I printed out for my renewal says $67 -- maybe they raised it to $75 since the time I printed my form out (?).

Basquo, where do you see the $25 "execution" fee mentioned?

I also don't see them mention what form payment must be in.  Must it be a M.O. or a cashier's check?

Mine was $67 last summer.  I don't think you pay an execution fee on renewals.
By the way...they were quoting 12-14 weeks when I sent mine in.  It took 8 days, and that was without any express handling or mailing.
Again...this was a renewal, not a new application.

Yes, I was thinking that extra execution fee might just be for new passports.  It's definitely been raised from the $67 though since last year when I printed my form out.

Good Reminder - I haven't even gotten my new state ID, library card or voter registration since moving to NC.

Gotta get a move on!

Our good friend just got a passport for her teen son.  She said it was $165 and took 6wks.  This was his first passport.  Not sure if the cost is the same for a kids' passport (only valid for 5yrs)  and an adult passport (valid 10yrs).  Looks like I need to get going since I've let my passport expire. :(

The fees have increased, but I don't know by how much. I saw a notice at the post office about it.

When I am next there, I will see what it says.

Since I had mine renewed for Montreal, it is still good. Actually, its good until 2016.

I sent mine off a couple of weeks ago.  If you google "passport + application" (yes, I googled..aren't you amazed!), then click on the state department site, you can download the forms.  The one thing that has changed is before you could file by mail IF your passport was no more than 10yrs old.  NOW, you can file by mail if your passport is less than 15yrs old.  Mine will be 15years old in May, so I was able to file by mail for $80.  For mini, we had to make an appointment with the Clerk of Court and go to the courthouse.  her's was only $75.  Also, 5 days after you apply, you can begin tracking the progress of your application on line.  Currently, the estimated time is 4 wks door-to-door, or 3 wks if you pay an extra $60.

Hope that helps!

Little Miss Mini got her passport in the mail today!  Door-to-door, it only took 10 days.  I just checked on the status of my application, and it's saying it'll be at least 3 more weeks before I get mine.  I guess they're trying to figure out why the person on the original passport picture - taken 15 years ago - doesn't look like the pictures submitted for the reknewal.  I didn't age very gracefully.

I got the prices here http://www.usps.com/passport/welcome.htm

and it's an "acceptance" fee, not "execution" like I said back in the day.  my bad.

US Govt. has postponed passport requirements until July 1, 2009.

For those of us who live in the US, we only need carry a state-issued Drivers' License or ID Card (with photo) AND a copy of your birth certificate.

This may save a few people some $$

I think you're confusing US citizens traveling by "sea or land" (which will go into effect in 2009) with those traveling by air.  As far as I know, if we're travelling by air, we MUST have a valid passport.

RAB

http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html

Here's the applicable text:

AIR TRAVEL

ALL PERSONS traveling by air outside of the United States are required to present a passport or other valid travel document to enter or re-enter the United States.

LAND AND SEA TRAVEL
The following summarizes information available on the Department of Homeland Security’s website.

CURRENTLY:
U.S. citizens need to present either (a) a passport, passport card (available in spring 2008), or WHTI-compliant document; or (b) a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, along with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate.
LATER:
On June 1, 2009, the U.S. government will implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of WHTI. The proposed rules require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have a passport, passport card, or WHTI-compliant document.

Edit to add link and text.

My apologies.  I either misunderstood or mis-read (from their site).

Sorry for any confusion.
