Hash Use & Mushroom Use With Meds
« on: April 18, 2018, 04:12:15 pm »
Hello everyone,

The following question may seem very unimportant, or maybe even offensive, since there may be more serious concerns that people have in their lives. But it is the only platform that I can hope to receive advice about this. I have no doctors in my country to discuss such topics.

Anyway, the question is: Does anybody know if consuming hash (hashish), or mushrooms, while using the meds Truvada & Kaletra is okay, or not okay. (Could be answered by experience, or maybe by having received some medical advice from a professional.)

I sometimes smoke weed. It did not cause me any trouble. So I assume hash would not either. But wanted to ask anyway. I have no knowledge about mushrooms and its interaction with meds...

Thank you in advance.

Interactions with illicit drugs are always a bit tricky, mainly because there have been few formal studies, and what you may actually get on the street may not be exactly what you always think it is.

That said, the interaction checker I use does have an 'illicit drugs' check on it
https://www.hiv-druginteractions.org/checker

For cannabis, it seems there is a weak interaction with lopinavir and ritonavir (components of Kaletra) which *may* increase THC levels in the plant being smoked/ingested.

It doesn't list mushrooms, but for other psychoactive drugs - such as LSD - the same HIV drugs show a potential interaction which could increase the potency of the drug's psychoactive properties. This would sign-post to me that a similar affect may happen with mushrooms, but I'm no expert.

So basically, as with any drug taking - any risks you take are yours but you should be aware of the possible increase in potency and dose accordingly, at least to start with.

If there are serious concerns then it may be best to ask your doctor. In my experience, HIV docs are pretty well grounded and realistic when it comes to the use of recreational drugs and their affects, even if they don't agree with their use personally.

Thank you so much CaveyUK for the advice, and for the website recommendation. I'll check.
